The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Syria and Rhetoric on Chemical Weapons

Damascus (Prensa Latina) The rhetoric about the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government pushes events toward a possible military aggression which, in the opinion of heads of state and political experts, could ignite the region. After the so-called armed opposition argued the authorities had used toxic agents on August 21, a virulent campaign was unleashed by the media and some Western capitals and the Middle East against Damascus, with threats preceding an almost imminent attack.

Syria Holds Israel Responsible for Fires in Occupied Golan

Damascus, Jul 16 (Prensa Latina) Syrian authorities accused Israel today of continuing with the policy of causing premeditated fires in the Golan Heights zone, a territory illegally occupied by Israel since 1967. Zayed al-Tahan, member of the Quneitra Government Executive Office, in southern Syria, told local reporters that Israeli occupation authorities started a big fire on Monday afternoon which spread up to the outskirts of Hamidieh and al-Hurrieh, in the Golan area which remains under the Syrian sovereignty.

Damascus, Oct 12 (Prensa Latina) Syrian Interior Minister Muhammad al-Shaar said today that his country’s government is making a huge effort to start a political dialogue among Syrians without foreign interference. Syrian Forces Kill Chechen, Afghan Mercenaries

Damascus, Oct 9 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian Arab Army (EAS) killed Czech and Afghan mercenaries during clashes in the Ziraha neighborhood in the town of Qusseir, in Homs province, an official source reported on Tuesday. As part of an offensive executed on Monday against those groups in areas near the border with Lebanon, EAS troops clashed with armed groups operating in the zone in west Homs, 162 kilometers north of Damascus.

Over 20 Death Reported in Armed Groups Attacks in Syria

Damascus, 30 Sep (Prensa Latina) At least 17 civilians died today in an attack by armed bands against the locality of Al Haidariya, municipality of al-Qseir, in the central Syrian province of Homs, 162 kilometers from this capital. According to a military source the groups attacked that location with mortars and machine guns, in the early morning hours of Sunday. It was also reported the kidnapping of a yet undetermined number of people.
