U.S. blocks Cuba unjustly

The U.S. blockade of Cuba has cost the Cuban telecommunications industry more than seven billion USD in losses in the last year alone, created obstacles to the purchase of hardware and software, and hindered Cubans’ ability to surf the Internet. The seven billion USD in losses were reported for May 2010 to April 2011, according to a Cuban government report sent to the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

Cuba in Geneva: Right to Development without Blockade

Cuba on Thursday reiterated its commitment with development despite the blockade the United States has maintained on the island for over 50 years ago, during a speech at the UN Human Right Council (HRC). Cuban delegate Juan Antonio Quintanilla stated that the main obstacle for the right to the development of the Cuban people is the economic, trade and financial blockade imposed by Washington. That blockade is a massive, blatant and systematic violation of the human rights of a people, particularly the right to development, Quintanilla noted.

Primary healthcare workers on Tuesday began a 48-hour strike to oppose privatization. Leaders of the National Confederation of Municipal Health Workers (CONFUSAM), which organized the strike, said they were protesting the privatization of public health services through concessions and contracts with private companies. The public health sector should be strengthened with an injection of more funds from the government to provide the population with better health care, said CONFUSAM president Carolina Espinoza.
