THE STORY of the Cuban Five is a complicated one, but that’s not stopping a troupe of child actors from tackling history. The Cuban children’s theater group La Colmenita (Little Beehive) will mix fantasy and reality to tell the tale of these Cuban national heroes tonight at Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture. The play, “Abracadabra,” speaks to a top concern among Cubans, said Carlos Alberto Cremata, who founded the group in 1990.

Cuban Children’s Theater Director Responds to Harsh Attack by Prominent U.S. Congresswoman

The director of a Cuban children’s theater group touring the U.S. expressed dismay Tuesday that the chair of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs would use her political power to try and stop them from delivering a message of peace, love and cultural understanding. In a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Florida) demanded to know why the troupe, La Colmenita, was given visas and whether any taxpayer money was used for the trip. She also called on the White House to end all cultural exchanges between the U.S. and Cuba.

I devoured the base document for the National Conference of the Communist Party of Cuba to be held next January. To come to one of the Meccas of classical dance worldwide, it must be done in style, and this is what Camaguey’s Cuban Ballet intends to do, with its premiere in this capital of “Flammes de Paris”. This demanding work has never been presented by the prestigious company from Camaguey, whose historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The first performance will be in the City of Light today, and tomorrow the company presents the work at the Palais des Congres in Porte de Maillot.

Cuban anti-terrorist Rene Gonzalez, who is on probation in the United States, called to continue fighting for the release of his four fellow countrymen, who have been imprisoned in the United States since 1998. Rene Gonzalez, along with Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero and Gerardo Hernandez were severely condemned for reporting terrorist plans against Cuba, which were forged by terrorist groups based in the state of Florida.

Cuba Awaits Strong Condemnation to US Blockade

Cuba is awaiting the international community once again pronounces against the economic, financial and commercial blockade of the US government against the Caribbean island for more than 50 years, declared Cuban Ambassador to Caracas Rogelio Polanco. The Cuban diplomat told Prensa Latina that the authorities of Cuba will present a resolution on the negative consequences of the blockade to Cuba, for the consecutive 20th time, before the United Nations Organization’s General Assembly.

Four Cuban Dancers among the World’s 100 Best

Cuban dancers Viengsay Valdés, Alejandro Virelles, Dani Hernández and Osiel Gounod were selected among the best 100 dancers of the 2010-2011 season by the prestigious Dance Europe magazine, confirmed to Prensa Latina sources of the National Ballet of Cuba. In the magazine’s top 100, Valdez has the 4th place of female dancers and the 6th place of the world list; meanwhile Hernadez has the 16th place, Virelles the 18th and Gounod the 21st.

Chilean University Students Arrested at Education Ministry

The Chilean police arrested about 20 Chilean university students by force Thursday, when they were peacefully trying to occupy the Education Ministry. According to Bio Bio radio station, officials from that ministry were upset because of the excessive use of violence against the students, who were seated at the building’s main entrance. The objective of the protest action was to denounce the government´s intransigence towards the reiterated demands by students and the people in favor of free, public education, said Cesar Urbina, vice president of the Metropolitan University of Technology.
