Wilfredo Pérez Jr has mixed feelings about his trip to Barbados – on one hand he feels genuine sympathy and acceptance but on the other, the pain of reliving the worst day of his life. If the name sounds familiar to those who have first-hand knowledge of the events of October 6, 1976, then that is no coincidence. Pérez shares his name with the pilot of that fateful plane trip now known as the Cubana air disaster. He is in fact the son of that pilot, and he is here to take part in a week of activities in commemoration of that tragedy.

500 arrested at Occupy Wall Street protest as demonstrators and NYPD shut down Brooklyn Bridge

Thousands of Occupy Wall Street protesters swarmed the Brooklyn Bridge Saturday, shutting down car lanes and setting up yet another tense showdown with the NYPD. Roughly 500 people were arrested after standing in the roadway, blocking the Brooklyn-bound lanes. Traffic in the opposite direction was slowed — but still running after the 4 p.m. standoff. An army of cops swooped in after the demonstrators took over the bridge’s pedestrian walkway and flooded onto the car lanes heading to Brooklyn. The showdown halted traffic on the bridge for nearly three hours.

The President orders the killing of an American

Today, the media tells us that the president of the United States in the person of Barack Obama has now extended the power of his office to order the assassination of fellow citizens without a shred of due process. Anwar al-Awlaki, whose death has been announced by media all over the world, was born in New Mexico and lived for years in the U.S. Sabir Khan, a second U.S. citizen, was also killed in the attack aimed at al-Awlaki.

They were taken to concentration camps through Germany, Poland and Ukraine. The newly created Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), West Germany’s federal intelligence service hired him in 1958, even though he never made a secret of his past, according to the documents seen by Der Spiegel magazine.

Persevering

Diana Nyasa swim from U.S. to Cuba

It’s a little after 10am and Diana is swimming strongly. We are 67 nautical miles from Cuba. She has a strong heart rate of 85 and is persevering. The challenge will be the prospect of crossing the Gulf Stream to reach land. Every professional aboard the flotilla, whether they be physicians or international marathon swimming hall of fame representatives, is astounded at this achievement, even to this point.

The Spanish University of Alicante (UA) conferred it’s Honoris Causa doctorate to the Historian of Havana, Eusebio Leal. At the ceremony, the house of higher studies highlighted Leal work in the process of restoration and conservation of the historic area of Havana, combined with the economic and social development of his community. The Historian of Havana thanked the distinction and stressed the historic ties between Spain and his country.

The presidents of Chile, Dominican Republic, Peru, Suriname and Costa Rica are expected to deliver speeches on Thursday, the second day of debate of the 66th regular session of the UN General Assembly. Chilean President Sebastian Piñera will speak in the morning, while the Dominican Republic’s Leonel Fernandez, Peru’s Ollanta Humala and Suriname’s Desire Bouterse will do so in the afternoon.
