World Youth Study Medicine in Cuba

More than 20,000 youth from Latin American, African and Oceania countries are currently training in the Medical Sciences universities of all Cuban provinces. The 2011-2012 school year officially began on Monday at the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM), located at the outskirts of Havana, with an enrollment of about 2,300 foreign students. This is the 12th academic year of this institution, founded in 1999 by an initiative by the leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro. Previously, the center graduated about 10,000 physicians.

UN High Commissioner Updated on Case of Cuban 5

The UN high commissioner for human rights, Navi Pillay, was informed on Friday about the situation of five Cuban antiterrorists held in U.S. prisons. Ambassador Rodolfo Reyes, Cuba’s permanent representative to the UN, sent a letter to Pillay about the case of Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, and Rene Gonzalez, known as the Cuban Five.

Torture in Afghan Prisons Exposed

“Hypocritical and manipulative” were the words used by insurgent leaders to describe NATO reports on torture in prisons in the Afghan provinces of Herat, Khost, Lagman, Kapisa and Takhar. Obama Never Answered Interview of Cuban Blogger

A cable revealed by the Wikileaks website shows that US President Barack Obama never really answered a questionnaire by Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez in 2009, Cuba’s TV News Program broadcast on Monday. The questionnaire was answered by officials at the U.S. Interests Sections in Havana, and then sent to the White House on August 28, 2009 and it took about 4 months to return, according to the source.

President Raul Castro Leads Defense Minister’s Funeral

Cuban President Raul Castro on Monday led a tribute to late Army General Julio Casas Regueiro, Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR), who died on Saturday. During the funeral, held on the first floor of the Sierra Maestra building, headquarters of the Defense Ministry, it was announced that the Council of State had conferred on Casas Regueiro the postmortem title of Hero of Labor of the Republic of Cuba.

Cuba will Not Recognize National Transition Council in Libya

The Republic of Cuba will not recognize the National Transition Council or any provisional authority in Libya; it will only recognize a government set up in that country in a legitimate way and by the free, sovereign and unique will of the Libyan people, reads a declaration released on Saturday by the Cuban Foreign Ministry.
