The University as a promoter of social and cultural change

Cuba is hosting the XIII Latin American University Extension Congress, as the 100th anniversary of the Córdoba Reform draws close. This historical event, initiated in Argentina in 1918, laid the foundation of the social role of Latin American universities. Inaugurated yesterday June 1, the Congress is being held at Havana’s Convention Center, with more than 400 delegates from 20-some countries in attendance.

Cuba: International Education Congress Opens

Havana, Feb 4 (Prensa Latina) The International Congress “Pedagogia 2013″ begins activities today with a master lecture by Cuban Education Minister Ena Elsa Velazquez, and a cultural event with about 500 students from art schools. The scientific event, to be run until February 8, is one of the largest one of its kind in the country, and it expects the attendance of about 3,000 people from some 32 countries, authorities from the Ministry of Education (MINED) said at a news conference.

Cuban University Students in Virtual Sexuality Forum


Santiago de Cuba, Jan 10 (Prensa Latina) The First National Student Conclave Virtual University of learning about sexuality will be held at the Medical University of this city from the next 28 january, organizers said today. Sexsalud 2013 will be carry out by Infomed, the telematics network system in Cuba, and it is sponsored by the National Center for Sexual Education (CENESEX), Provincial Information Center of Medical Sciences and magazines Alma Mater and April 16.

Ecuador Plans Reforms to Improve Educational Quality


Ecuador”s government aspires to consolidate and reform the public education infrastructure to improve the quality of that sector, according to an announcement by President Rafael Correa. The head of state’s statements appear today in the digital newspaper El Ciudadano, which also reports the state agreement with the nonprofit organization Educational Testing Service to assess the skills of professors who teach English in the country.

Chilean University Students Arrested at Education Ministry

The Chilean police arrested about 20 Chilean university students by force Thursday, when they were peacefully trying to occupy the Education Ministry. According to Bio Bio radio station, officials from that ministry were upset because of the excessive use of violence against the students, who were seated at the building’s main entrance. The objective of the protest action was to denounce the government´s intransigence towards the reiterated demands by students and the people in favor of free, public education, said Cesar Urbina, vice president of the Metropolitan University of Technology.

Chile: “We Are Prepared to Give Our Lives for Education”


As students and teachers continue their massive protests in the streets of Chile’s cities, one of the most extreme methods of demanding higher-quality, free public education is the hunger strike being undertaken by 28 youngsters at secondary schools across the country, four of whom have not taken food for nearly 40 days.
