Cuba sees over one billion dollars in tourist revenue in first half of 2016

On November 10, Cuba’s National Office for Statistics and Information (ONEI) reported tourist revenue amounting to over 1.2 billion dollars in the first half of 2016, a 15% increase as compared to the same period last year. According to the ONEI the figure only includes revenue from institutions affiliated with the Ministry of tourism, that is to say, excluding private businesses.

Why are we so afraid of Cuba?

In the morning before breakfast and the start of our intensive journey throughout Cuba, Chuck Wurth would walk through the neighborhoods surrounding our hotels in Havana and Cienfuegos. Wurth, of Overland Park, then would return and share what he had gleaned with his wife, Antonia, and the 21 others in our National Association for Multicultural Education group. His personal, on-the-street, unscripted interactions with everyday Cubans caused Wurth to ask our group: “What are we so afraid of?”

Havana hosts HostelCuba tourism services Fair

Interest in promoting tourism on the island was confirmed during the Technology and Services Fair HostelCuba 2016, held in Havana’s Pabexpo exposition center. Dedicated to tourism services, the Fair is a new initiative organized by Spanish company Fira Barcelona and Cuba’s Pabexpo, which aims to strengthen the development of tourism on the island.

January, a good month for tourism

According to figures released by the National Office of Information and Statistics (ONEI), 2016 has begun with positive results for the tourist sector. A report published on the ONEI website reveals that January saw the arrival of 417,764 tourists to Cuba, a 12.7% increase as compared to the same period last year, when 370,830 visited the island.
