Guanahacabibes on cruise ship route

Since the start of cruise operations, on December 9, the Guanahacabibes Peninsula has seen eleven cruise ship arrive, and expects to surpass ninety before the close of the season, in the month of June. José Antonio Aguilera, a representative of the Viajes Cubanacán agency in Pinar del Río, told Granma that, during this period, they expect to receive over 16,000 visitors, traveling on ships that stop at various sites across the island as well as the Caribbean, such as Jamaica and Grand Cayman.

This year saw Cuba receive almost 20,000 cruise ship visitors, while prospects for the Caribbean – which has become one of the most popular destinations for this variety of tourism – remain strong, noted a sector expert. Italian airline expands flights to Cuba

The Italian airline Neos is considering a new flight to the central Cuban province of Villa Clara. Mid October saw the arrival of the company’s first flight to the keys – the province’s main tourist destination – located off the region’s northern coastline, reports EFE. Onboard this first flight were some 200 Milan-based tour operators and travel agents who arrived to the province’s Abel Santamaría International Airport, interested in the quality of services and variety of tourist options offered on the island’s north-eastern keys, renowned for their virtually pristine beaches.

Venezuela, largest regional source of tourists to Cuba

Venezuela is currently the source of the largest number of tourists to Cuba in the Latin American and Caribbean region, with an increase of close to 60% in 2015, according to Pablo Vázquez, representative of the Cuban Ministry of Tourism (Mintur) for this South American nation, Colombia and Central America. This places the country ninth place in the world in terms of the number of tourists to the island, he noted.

Christopher Columbus did not visit Cuba as a tourist but, withoutdoubt, he has been the leading propagandist of tourism to the Caribbean island in recorded history. According to some historians, Columbus wrote or said that it was “the most beautiful land human eyes have ever seen.” Of course, after sailing for several months across the Atlantic with only sea water in sight, the Genoese admiral may not have been completely objective in his assessment, which has served however to promote Cuba’s tourist
