In Geneva, Lifting of Blockade Against Cuba Demanded of Obama

Geneva, Apr 26 (Prensa Latina) The Belgian economist and writer Marc Vandepitte described the persistent blockade by the United States against Cuba as “scandalous” and called on President Barack Obama to lift it, as the United Nations has also demanded. The blockade has a high cost to the small Caribbean country, as it affects trade, investment and financial transactions, Vandepitte told Prensa Latina after speaking at a conference on the Cuban economy at the Palais de Nations.

Cuba Presents Report to Human Rights Council

Havana, Apr 23 (Prensa Latina) Cuba’s Foreign Ministry officially presented today the Report to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the Human Rights Council, scheduled to take place on May 1 in Geneva, Switzerland. The document focuses on the recommendations accepted by Cuba in February 2009, when the first UPR cycle was presented, disclosed sources of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, body responsible for drawing up the text.

Maradona arrived in Havana on Friday night from Caracas, occasion in which he visited the Mountain Barracks where he paid tribute to the Supreme Commander of the Bolivarian Revolution Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias, and met with the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro.

Geneva, Mar 25 (Prensa Latina) Cuba played a decisive role at the 22nd regular session of the Human Rights Council here, where important resolutions were promoted, while selectivity, double standards, and Western accusations against certain Southern countries were opposed. According to a communique released today by Havana’s embassy in Geneva, the United Nations has adopted by consensus the proposal made by Cuba on the right to food, agreeing to continue to deal with that issue in the Council.
