The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Pertierra´s journals describe the testimony, evidence, legal skirmishes, quirks and follies of this very historic trial that features for the first time the close collaboration of the United States government with Cuban authorities to prosecute an ex CIA agent who is one of the masterminds of the fifty-year old dirty war against Cuba.

Vietnamese Media Highlight Visit of Raul Castro
Hanoi, Jul 9 (Prensa Latina) The media of Vietnam highlighted the visit here of Cuban President, Raul Castro, and his dialogue with the highest national authorities, as a high point in the continuing development of the historical relations and cooperation between the two countries. Newspapers, websites, radio and television still distribute on Monday pictures from the official reception at the Presidential Palace, with an honor guard composed of the three armed forces branches for this country.

Cuba Exhorts at UN to Eradicate Illegal Arms Trafficking
United Nations, Jul 6 (Prensa Latina) Cuba exhorted at the United Nations to reach an international accord to prevent, fight and eradicate illegal arms trafficking, in which many people and States currently suffer from its negative consequences. Addressing the UN Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty, Cuban ambassador to that body Rodolfo Benitez Verson stated that his country will not support any treaty that affects the legitimate interests of the island’s defense and national security.

President Raul Castro Meets Chinese counterpart
Beijing 5 jul (Prensa Latina) Cuba and China noted the excellent state of their relations, discussed extensively by Presidents Raul Castro and Hu Jintao during official talks at the Great Palace of the People, in Beijing. Both heads of state held a private meeting before those talks, also preceded by the official welcoming ceremony to the Cuban leader and his delegation, composed by the Vice President of the Council of Ministers Ricardo Cabrisas and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez.

Rene González Doesn’t Want to be a U.S. Citizen
Two notes associated with the case of the Cuban Five which happened to be published recently by various Cuban media outlets on the same day, deal with issues so obvious, and at the same time so ignored by U.S. authorities, that it’s worth comparing the headlines. The first had to do with the new motion presented by Rene González’s attorney, asking once again for the same thing that was called for before he left prison: that he be allowed to return to Cuba, where his home and family are.

Cuba Calls General Elections
Havana, Jul 5 (Prensa Latina) Cuba’s Council of State has called general elections to choose delegates to municipal and provincial assemblies of the Peoples’ Power, as well as deputies to the National Parliament. According to an official note published by Granma newspaper, the call takes place in accordance with provisions of the Constitution of the Republic and the Electoral Law No.72 in force since October 29, 1992.

Cuban President Raul Castro Visits China
Beijing, Jul 4 (Prensa Latina) Cuba”s President Raul Castro began today an official visit to China, focused on strengthening bilateral relations, through the signing of some cooperation agreements. According to reports, the Cuban head of State also expects to talk with his Chinese peer Hu Jintao and other top authorities about international and regional issues of common interest.

President Correa Considers Strange Nature Charges against Assange
Quito, Jun 22 (Prensa Latina) Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa affirmed his government analyzes the request of political asylum made by the Australian journalist Julian Assange and considered of strange nature the charges against him. “Everyone knows he is a fighter for freedom of expression without limits,” Correa said in reference to the founder of Wikileaks, who faces extradition to Sweden for alleged sex crimes rejected by him.

New Legal Action to Favor Cuban 5
Washington, Jun 22 (Prensa Latina) Defense lawyers of Cuban antiterrorist fighter Gerardo Hernandez presented a new legal action at a court in south Florida, the International Committee to Free the Five stated today. Jurists Tom Goldstein and Martin Garbus, defend attorneys of Hernandez, filed a motion at the Southern District Court of Florida, through his local attorney Richard Klugh.
