Cuba Calls General Elections

Havana, Jul 5 (Prensa Latina) Cuba’s Council of State has called general elections to choose delegates to municipal and provincial assemblies of the Peoples’ Power, as well as deputies to the National Parliament.

According to an official note published by Granma newspaper, the call takes place in accordance with provisions of the Constitution of the Republic and the Electoral Law No.72 in force since October 29, 1992.

“Delegates to the municipality assemblies of the People’s Power will be elected for a two-year and a half term, on Sunday, October 21, 2012,” the text states.

In places where candidates fail to get over 50 percent of votes, there will be a runoff October 28.

The date for the election of provincial delegates and deputies to the Peoples Power National Assembly for a five-year term will be set at the proper time, the daily says
