In Cuba, COVID-19 is everyone’s business

Cuba, enfremera covidIf one thing has become clear over the 84 days of Cuba’s battle against COVID-19, it has been the need to integrate all efforts to save lives. Today, with Havana as the epicenter, this premise is key and the Cuban government is closely following the situation in the capital, which this Tuesday confirmed nine new cases, for a total of 1,075 since March 11, when the first new coronavirus infection was confirmed.

A large portion of the meeting – led by President of the Republic Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz – was devoted to analysis of the epidemiological situation in Havana, where, according to Minister of Public Health José Ángel Portal Miranda, 152 of the 180 active cases that remain in Cuba are located.

Havana Governor Reinaldo Garcia Zapata, detailed the latest transmission event at the AICA lab, with five of the nine positive cases in the city on Tuesday.

A total of 1,035 workers are being tested at the site, to safely conclude the study of causes and conditions that led to the outbreak at this important institution.

Deputy Prime Minister Roberto Morales Ojeda insisted, “In Havana we must continue administering at least 1,500 PCR tests a day, not only of contacts and suspected patients, we must go further…”

Later in the meeting, the head of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) Medical Services Directorate, Brigadier General Francisco Martínez Quintela, detailed the participation of these institutions in the COVID-19 battle, following Army General Raúl Castro Ruz’s instructions to incorporate six of the country’s military hospitals and two territorial posts.

Since March 13, he said, 6,863 patients have been hospitalized, of whom 1,347 have tested positive for COVID-19. That number represents 64.6% of the total number diagnosed n the country.

In our intensive care units, he added, 35 patients have died from the new coronavirus, for a lethality rate of 2.5%, far below the world average which stood at 6.06% on Tuesday.

“In addition, we participated in 14 clinical trials proposed by the Ministry of Pblic Health and the BioCubaFarma enterprise group, among which the use of Heberferon Alpha 2b, the CIGB-258 peptide with critical patients, hyperimmune plasma, and more recently studies related to the psychological support strategy, stand out for their satisfactory results.”

After the detailed presentation, President Díaz-Canel lauded the excellent results that have been achieved at FAR institutions, and the modesty of staff members, who have spared no effort in the noble task of saving lives. As part of a people entirely devoted to the battle against COVID-19, military institutions have made a significant contribution.
