President Díaz-Canel visits major works underway in Mariel Special Development Zone

Canel MarielThe President of Cuba’s Councils of State and Ministers, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, reviewed work underway at the Biotechnology Industrial Complex, the largest project within the Zone, where latest generation products will be manufactured.

During the Saturday tour of the Special Development Zone, focused on attracting foreign investment, the President stopped at the construction site of this important factory being built with 100% Cuban capital and set to begin operations in 2020.

Díaz-Canel likewise confirmed progress being made in preparing parcels for prospective users, guaranteeing infrastructure for the provision of water, electricity, communications, and waste water management.

He toured the Center for Food Preparation and Distribution (CEDA), completed in October of 2018, which predominately serves the Zone’s construction workforce; and visited the Spanish company ProFood’s facilities devoted to preparing and distributing foodstuffs and beverages to hotels, which is expanding to contribute to replacing imports with domestic products.

In context: Last year saw the greatest foreign investment to date in the Zone: 474 million; while at the close of 2018 agreements had been reached with a total of 43 users, 17 operating.
