Over these first days of August, Cuba has won the most medals thus far during the Tokyo-2020 Olympic Games, a total of seven, including the golds of Mijaín López, with his fourth Olympic crown, Luis Orta, with his first, and the Cuban rowing duo of Serguey Torres and Fernando Dayán, who closed a magical day, giving the Cuban delegation its best day of these Games. An impressive young Luis Orta, gave another wrestling dissertation to win the title, and not to mention Mijaín López, with a final in which he showed himself to as strong as ever.

A right jab to the face of the right wing

A Cuban-born boxer representing Spain, upon learning that he would face Julio Cesar La Cruz in the quarterfinals, excited haters of the Revolution with his bragging and offensive sloganeering, but lost the bout. With action and words, as if all of Cuba was speaking in his voice and posture, Julio Cesar La Cruz responded in the Olympic ring. The provocative comments of his rival Enmanuel Reyes, a Cuban-born boxer nationalized in Spain, upon learning that he would face La Cruz in the quarterfinals, roused those who encourage hate and demonize the Revolution.

For the first time ever, Cuban baseball out of Olympic competition

Cuba, once again, was defeated by Canada. The national team had a chance against the northerners, just as was the case against Venezuela, but came up short in attention to the details, that count big-time in baseball. There were too many mistakes for a game of vital importance: The opening pitcher failed again and was replaced in the first inning.

Cuba assures its right to participate in the Americas’ pre-Olympic baseball competition

After weeks of delays, on the afternoon of May 25, the Cuban Baseball Federation (FCB) was notified of the emission of visas requested at the U.S. embassy in Havana for our national baseball team to travel to the state of Florida, to compete in the continental pre-Olympic tournament of the Americas, intent upon qualifying for the Tokyo Games.

“Cuba is grateful to all the institutions and individuals who, with good will and active interventions, contributed to overcoming the multiple obstacles to guaranteeing the participation of our national baseball team in the pre-Olympic in Florida,” stated Party Political Bureau member and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla.

Another title for Carlos Martí

Cuban baseball to participate in Caribbean Cup

The Cuban Baseball Federation has expressed interest in participating in the third edition of the Caribbean Baseball Cup, to be held in Curaçao next April. Higinio Vélez, head of the organization, told Jit that the tournament will include teams from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Panama, Peru, Chile and Aruba. Ernesto Reinoso, national baseball Commissioner, reported that the Cuban team will include members of the pre-selection group to be designated with semifinals currently underway.

They demanded a higher level of physical conditioning of us, at just the right time.” The words of Rolando Acebal, head coach of the Cuban national boxing team, were emphatic. Cuba will participate in the World University Chess Championship

The first includes Carlos Daniel Albornoz, champion of the recently conducted continental competition; Rachel Palmero, Pan-American bronze medalist; Augusto Campos, Jorge Elías, Abel López and Laritza Alfonso. Members of the second group include Jorge Gómez, Marlon La Villa, César Pérez, Melissa Rodríguez, Karla July Fernández and Leancy Fernández, according to information conveyed to Jit magazine by International Arbiter Isbel Herrera, chess coordinator for Cuban universities.
