The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Pertierra´s journals describe the testimony, evidence, legal skirmishes, quirks and follies of this very historic trial that features for the first time the close collaboration of the United States government with Cuban authorities to prosecute an ex CIA agent who is one of the masterminds of the fifty-year old dirty war against Cuba.

Ceremony to mark 40th anniversary of Operation Carlota
As a symbol of Cuba’s internationalism, a cultural-political act and military parade to commemorate the solidarity and military support of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba to the People’s Republic of Angola was held today, marking the 40th anniversary of the start of Operation Carlota. At the former Triunvirato sugar plantation in Matanzas, now the RebelSlaveMuseum, the ceremony was presided over by theFirst Vice President ofthe Councils of Stateand Ministers, Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, EstebanLazo,president of the Cubanparliament,andother members of the Party’s Politburo.

UNESCO praises Cuba’s achievements in education
UNESCO Director General, Irina Bokova received Cuba’s Minister of Higher Education, Rodolfo Alarcón Ortiz, heading the island’s delegation to the 38th UNESCO General Conference, being held in the French capital. During the cordial and friendly meeting the Minister thanked the Director General for her active participation in promoting the UN Post-2015 educational agenda, the organization’s main aim, and commented on Cuba’s achievements in the sphere.

Recognition for Cuban medical researchers
With the aim of highlighting the achievements made in research, scientific production and the introduction and extension of technology in clinical and surgical care, Cuba awards the Annual Health Prize in recognition of sector professionals who have made significant contributions to the sciences. The research paper entitled “First epidemic of hemorrhagic dengue in the Americas, 1981: new insights into the causative agent”, by Dr. Rosmeri Rodríguez Roche, of the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine, was awarded the Grand Prize, as the complete genome sequence of the dengue virus type 2 epidemic of the eighties was discovered.

Cabrisas receives Slovak Minister of Economy
On Tuesday, November 3, Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, vice president of the Council of Ministers, received Vazil Hudák, minister of Economy of the Slovak Republic, who is heading a delegation of business representatives from a wide range of sectors to the Havana International Trade Fair. The meeting saw a fruitful exchange on the positive state of bilateral relations and prospects for their development. Both sides agreed on the advancement of links in the trade and economic spheres, particularly in the energy sector. Science for the management of marine resources
More than 400 delegates from fifteen countries have confirmed their participation at the 10th Congress on Marine Sciences, MarCuba 2015, which will be held from November 16 – 20 at Havana’s Convention Center.
Guillermo García Montero, president of the organizing committee, told reportersthat the eventwill include foursymposiumsdedicated tohighly topical issues, such as humanimpactsandrisk management, climate change, conservation and biodiversity,and biotechnologyandfood security.

Pedro de Oraá wins 2015 National Prize for Visual Arts

IN recognition of his lifetime achievements, painter, writer and critic Pedro de Oraá was awarded the 2015 National Prize for Visual Arts, granted annually by the Cuba’s National Visual Arts Council.

Manrique Larduet secures a ticket to Río 2016
The bronze medal for the high bar event was secured in fine style on November 1, by Cuba’s Manrique Larduet, who left the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, at which he was competing for the first time, with two medals.
The gymnast from Santiago de Cuba, 19, reawakened the dreams of those who follow this sport on the island, by taking the men’s all-around silver medal and securing his place at the Olympic Games in Río de Janeiro, 2016.

ETECSA and U.S. firm Sprint sign first direct roaming agreement
One of the key moments of the first day of the 33rd Havana International Trade Fair, Fihav 2015, was the signing of the first agreement between the Telecommunications Company of Cuba (ETECSA) and Sprint Communications Company LP., of the United States, to provide customers of this U.S. company with the possibility of making and receiving calls and text messages and transmitting data, when using their cell phones in Cuba.

Fihav 2015 welcomes international participation
The 33rd edition of Havana’s International Trade Fair, Fihav 2015, opens its doors today and will continue through November 7, at the city’s main fairgrounds and exposition center, Expocuba. More than 70 countries have representatives participating this year, utilizing more than 20,000 square meters of exposition space for their displays.
