Cuba is recognized worldwide as a safe tourist destination, a fact the United States cannot obscure
Cuba is recognized worldwide as a safe tourist destination, with outstanding hospitality, evidenced by the Excellence Award as the safest country for tourism, awarded at the 38th International Tourism Fair, in Madrid, Spain, in 2018. Such credentials cannot be obscured, despite the Trump administration’s media campaigns and sanctions on Cuba, escalating since 2017, with the purpose of undermining this strategic sector, key to the economic and social development of our country. These measures, along with other blockade restrictions, have caused losses amounting to some 1.383 billion dollars – from April 2018 to March 2019 alone – in important areas related to travel, services, operations and logistics. It is estimated that 35% of the total number of annual visitors to Cuba would be from the United States, if the blockade did not exist.

Caribbean Series begins without Cuba, excluded for deplorable political reasons
The Caribbean Baseball Series opened February 1 in Puerto Rico, with Cuba excluded, due to pressure from the United States and a deplorable political decision. Left out of the event at Puerto Rico’s Hiram Bithorn Stadium, was the nation that hosted the first edition of the classic in 1949. Nor do we forget that, in 1966, the U.S. government denied Cuban players visas to participate in the Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico an injustice that led to the historic Cerro Pelado adventure.

Despite measures implemented by the United States government since the end of 2017, intended to limit bilateral relations between the two countries -including the suspension of consular services in Havana; the expulsion of 17 diplomatic officials from our embassy in Washington, using unjustifiable and politically motivated pretexts; and recently the suspension of flights to nine destinations in Cuba – ties between the émigré community and the homeland have not been eliminated.
