One afternoon in May 1963, Fidel Castro visited the daily Pravda during his significant first trip to the Soviet Union. On leaving he said: “I would like our daily to be like this, the official voice of the party.” I believe those of us who accompanied him then were far from fully understanding his words. Three years later, in October 1965, we fully appreciated their meaning.

Cuban government sends condolences following attack in France

José Ramón Machado Ventura, second secretary of the Party Central Committee and a vice president of the Councils of State and Ministers, yesterday July 18, visited the French embassy in Havana to sign the condolences book opened there in the wake of an attack which occurred in the city of Nice, this past July 14, during a celebration of Bastille Day, killing 84 persons and injuring more than 200.

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa Says Rights of Deported Cubans Were Respected

Venezuela Reopens Pedestrian Border Crossing with Colombia

Venezuela has reopened a pedestrian border crossing into Colombia from San Antonio del Tachira, in the western state of Tachira. It marked the second time this month that the President Nicolas Maduro administration has decided to reopen the crossing, since a group of some 500 women all dressed in white tried to break their way through a military cordon there on July 5th.

Cuba Demands End of Double Standards and Selectiveness in Human Rights

Cuba issued a call at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday asking that the practice of double standards, selectiveness and political manipulation in the area of human rights come to an end. On the second and last day of a forum on the issue, Cuban representative Ana Silvia Rodriguez lashed out at such practices, describing them as a failure of the old UN Human Rights Commission.

On July 9 and 11, two groups of Cuban citizens of 29 and 46 persons respectively, illegally present in Ecuador, were deported to our country. They were transported in an Ecuadorian Air Force aircraft, respecting procedural guarantees established for such cases.
