COVID-19 statistics improving in Cuba, but without overconfidence

One hundred and ten days after the first three positive cases of COVID-19 were detected in Cuba, yesterday, June 29, the figures continued to be encouraging and testify to the work done to contain the epidemic. With eight new patients, ten medical discharges and no deaths the previous day, the positive trend continues. This was confirmed by Minister of Public Health José Angel Portal Miranda, in his update on the country’s epidemiological situation presented during the prevention and control.

Havana is the only remaining province in the country that has not made the transition to phase one of the COVID-19 recovery period. A total of 102 confirmed active cases of the new coronavirus in the province were reported, with new three cases added June 22, and most with a known source of infection; two local transmission events; an incidence rate per 100,000 inhabitants of 5.20 in the last 15 days, tending to decrease over the course of this time span; and a reproductive index of 0.62.

Cuba: Matanzas moves to recovery period, Havana advancing

The COVID-19 prevention and control task force, during its daily meeting led by President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, yesterday approved the opening of the recovery period’s first phase in the province of Matanzas, leaving only Havana working to make the transition, while 91.4% of COVID-19 patients in Cuba have recuperated. As detailed by the Prime Minister, the decision is effective today, June 23, in all Matanzas municipalities, joining the 14 other territories that are gradually moving toward a new normal.

In several towns around the country, spirited residents greeted health professionals from the Henry Reeve contingent returning home after supporting the COVID-19 battle in the Italian province of Lombardia. Cuba was obliged to wait to embrace our heroes in white lab coats, who spent two weeks in quarantine after returning from Italy, before heading to their neighborhoods and communities for a warm welcome.

The applause, with which Cuban doctors are rewarded every night for their tireless battle against the virus that threatens us today, rang out June 8, two hours earlier, as the 52 members of the Henry Reeve medical brigade, who departed for Lombardy last March 21, set foot on Cuban soil. Their mission would be the first in Europe undertaken by the contingent Fidel founded, allowing Cuba to illuminate the most dreary corners of the world with our health professionals.
