The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Cuba maintains tourist activity despite Covid-19 restrictions
Cuba maintains tourist activity with strict hygiene and safety protocols, despite restrictions in the country’s territories, due to an increase in Covid-19 cases. The Cuban Ministry of Tourism released an update of the health protocol to continue operations in the country’s major destinations.
According to the measures, posted on the Ministry’s website, it is essential that international travelers produce a negative PCR test done 72 hours before arriving in Cuba.

Cuba, Venezuela strengthen relations despite US blockade
Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodriguez assured on Saturday that her country is strengthening friendly relations with Cuba despite the US blockade affecting both countries. ‘We are here ratifying our ties, the Cuba-Venezuela sisterhood has been stronger and unstoppable, not even destroyed by the most savage criminal blockade that humanity has ever known,’ Rodriguez told the press concerning her visit to Havana. President Diaz-Canel says Cuban doctors dismantle US campaigns
President Miguel Diaz-Canel stressed on Saturday that the work of Cuban internationalist doctors dismantles the smear campaigns promoted by the United States. During a virtual meeting with members of the Henry Reeve Contingent who returned home recently, the president described Washington’s efforts to denigrate Cuba’s health collaboration as deceitful, slanderous and threatening. He also highlighted the important work of solidarity and cooperation that the Cuban brigades do in other parts of the world.

Diaz-Canel meets with Cuban doctors who returned home
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel met on Saturday with members of the Henry Reeve Brigade who were fighting Covid-19 in Peru, Qatar, Kuwait, Sierra Leone, Kenya and Guinea Bissau. In a teleconference, the president listened to the experiences of those professionals in the countries where they worked, the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) reported on its Twitter account. According to the information, the head of State repeated his welcome to the Homeland and talked with them as part of a regular practice by the president, after the health professionals return home.

Another British MP nominates Cuban doctors for Nobel Peace Prize
The campaign to grant the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize to Cuban internationalist doctors was joined on Saturday by British lawmaker Sam Tarry, the twentieth member of the United Kingdom’s Parliament who formalizes the nomination. As the Campaign of Solidarity with Cuba in the United Kingdom reported on Saturday, Tarry, who is a Labor MP from Ilford South, highlighted, in his letter to the Norwegian committee, the humanitarian and solidarity work done by the members of Cuba’s Henry Reeve Medical Contingent.

In Cuba, the Henry Reeve brigade that supported the fight against COVID-19 in Venezuela
Some 48 employees of the Henry Reeve International Contingent of Specialized Doctors in Disaster Situations and Serious Epidemics, who provided assistance in Venezuela in the fight against SARS-CoV-2, returned to the country this Friday. From the temporary working group to confront COVID-19, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, President of the Republic, welcomed them and pointed out that this brigade worked under complex conditions in six regions of the Venezuelan geography, where they also contributed to the recovery of Cuban health personnel infested with the virus.

Voices around the world reject U.S. aggression against Cuba
Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla thanked supporters around the world for their expressions of solidarity with Cuba, after our country was included on a list created by the United States government as a state sponsor of terrorism. On his Twitter account, Rodríguez, also member of the Party Political Bureau wrote: “We are grateful for the numerous expressions rejecting the inclusion of Cuba on the illegitimate State Department list by prominent members of the U.S. Congress, religious organizations, the Cuban émigré community, institutions and figures at the international level.”

Cuban science offers another sovereign response to the blockade and COVID-19
Given the appearance on the island of the first cases of COVID-19 in the month of March last year, the Cuban government attempted to purchase ventilators from the Swiss companies IMT Medial AG and Acutronic, as part of plans adopted to guarantee the resources needed to confront the epidemic.
But when these suppliers were acquired by the U.S. company Vyaire Medical Inc. both firms cancelled their commercial relations with Cuba, submitting to the provisions of the criminal economic blockade imposed by the United States on our country six decades ago.

Good news from Cuban science
The President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, again met with scientists and experts who, for more than ten months, have contributed to the COVID-19 battle in Cuba. Yesterday, January 13, they presented recent results which included an update on the development of a diagnostic based on magnetic extraction of virus RNA using nanotechnology. According to Dr. Angelina Díaz García, director of the Center for Advanced Studies, the development involves the laboratory reagent that allows for extracting the genetic material, which is an essential step in PCR testing for COVID-19.
