The oldest Chinese cemetery in the Americas – still intact – is found in the Mariel Special Development zone. The necropolis dates back to 1861 and is located on the western periphery of the bay next to Laza cove. The archeological discovery is relatively recent and was largely the result of specialists’ desire to learn the truth behind an old fisherman’s tale.

Pelé Big Attraction at Friendly Match Cosmos-Cuba

The former Brazilian soccer player Edson Arantes do Nascimento ”Pelé” will be one of the big attractions of the friendly match between Cosmos of New York and the Cuban selection next Tuesday, reported today Juventud Rebelde daily. Pele will travel to Cuba for the first time with the U.S. team to attend the considered historic game at the stadium Pedro Marrero of this caqpital, revealed Antonio Garces, vicepresident of the Cuban Soccer Association told the newspaper.

Cocoa and Chocolate Surprises in International Event in Cuba

Experts of nine countries continue discovering surprises of cocoa and chocolate in the East of Cuba, as part of events that started here last Tuesday. A Gastronomic Seminar and the 1st Symposium of Cocoa and Chocolate have their sessions in the city of Baracoa, province of Guantanamo and first town foundeed in the island by the Spaniards, with a conference about the discovery and conquest of that fabulous mix and the arrival to these lands by historian Alejandro Hartman.

Members of U.S. Congress in Havana favor ending blockade

Two Senators and two member of the House of Representatives visiting Havana agree that bipartisan support is growing for an end to travel restrictions and expansion of relations with Cuba. Speaking with the press May 27, the four agreed on the need to end the blockade and continue moving forward in the process of normalization of relations between the two countries. “We need to end this prohibition (the blockade)” and find a “pragmatic way” to interact which would benefit both peoples, said Congressman Raúl Grijalva, from Arizona, a member of the delegation which arrived in Cuba May 21.

Cuba Shows Significant Progress in Hunger Reduction

Despite Washington”s economic blockade of Cuba, this country is currently among the 16 nations that have succeeded in reducing hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean a region with significant progress in fighting that scourge. Among those efforts, the island reached in advance the goal established in the First World Summit on Food, held in 1996, of reducing in half the number of malnourished people before 2015.

U.S. fishing enthusiasts participate in Hemingway tournament

More than 130 fishermen on 24 teams took to the sea this week to participate in the 65th Ernest Hemingway International Billfishing Tournament, being held May 25-30, from Baracoa’s beach in the eastern province of Guántanamo, to the west of Havana and Guanabo, east of the capital. The Capitan of the Hemingway Nautical Club, José Miguel Díaz Escrich, expressed his satisfaction given the presence of U.S. sports fishers – authorized by the U.S. Treasury Department to participate in the competition for the first time in 35 years – including John and Patrick Hemingway, grandsons of the famous U.S. author.

In a tour of the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), Sanchez Ceren knew first hand the existing opportunities for cooperation with the recently created Group of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutic Industries of Cuba, BioCubaFarma, grouping 32 firms and 78 plants.

El Salvador’s President to Meet Raul Castro

El Salvador’s President Salvador Sanchez Ceren will hold today in this capital officials talks with his Cuban peer Raul Castro. The Central American statesman expects today to tour the Havana-based Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. After arriving in the Caribbean island yesterday, Sanchez Ceren attended a show given by La Colmenita (the Beehive), a Cuban children’s theater company.

Salvadoran President arrives in Cuba

Upon arriving in Cuba for his first official visit as President of El Salvador, yesterday May 26, Salvador Sánchez Cerén emphasized the solidarity and support shown his country by the Cuban people. He was received at Havana’s José Martí International Airport by Rogelio Sierra, Cuban deputy minister of Foreign Relations.

Life expectancy: 78.45 years

At the end of the period 2011-2013, the Cuban population’s life expectancy was 78.45 years, placing the island among the top 25 nations registering the highest figure in this human development indicator.
Juan Carlos Alfonso Fraga MSc. director of the National Office of Statistics and Information’s (ONEI) Center for Population and Development Studies (Cepde), stated to Granma that the cited figure represents a 0.48 increase in comparison to the period 2005-2007, which registered an average of 77.97 years. A rise in the life expectancy of both sexes was recorded in all provinces.
