El Salvador’s President to Meet Raul Castro

salvador-sanchez-cerenEl Salvador’s President Salvador Sanchez Ceren will hold today in this capital officials talks with his Cuban peer Raul Castro.

The Central American statesman expects today to tour the Havana-based Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology.

After arriving in the Caribbean island yesterday, Sanchez Ceren attended a show given by La Colmenita (the Beehive), a Cuban children’s theater company.

In statements to the press, the head of State said that one of the objectives of his official visit is to strengthen and increase the scientific-technical cooperation with Cuba, started almost six years ago.

In addition of increasing the economic and trade ties, the Salvadorian statesman spoke out for increasing the cultural collaboration, and particularly referred to the interest to transfer to his country the experience of La Colmenita children’s theater company.

It’s my pleasure to be here these days, a country I know very well, since the 80s, when we lived an internal conflict in our nations, Sanchez Ceren stated.

He recalled that the Salvadorian people was blessed and he was very happy on Saturday, May 23, with the beatification of Monsignor Oscar Arnulfo Romero, a man of peace, who lived amid the conflict in El Salvador, always on the side of the poor, justice and truth, he said.

Cuba and El Salvador established diplomatic relations on November 11, 1902. They were broken off on March 1, 1961 by a decision of the Central American country.

Ties were re-established on June 1, 2009, as a first act of the government of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, under the presidency of Mauricio Funes, who took office that same day.
