The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Pertierra´s journals describe the testimony, evidence, legal skirmishes, quirks and follies of this very historic trial that features for the first time the close collaboration of the United States government with Cuban authorities to prosecute an ex CIA agent who is one of the masterminds of the fifty-year old dirty war against Cuba.

Cuba continues to grow as a tourist destination
Cuba continues to occupy second place among the Caribbean’s top tourist destinations, according to a recent report by the Caribbean Tourism Organization. Various factors have contributed to this achievement. It must not be forgotten that last year 3,002,745 visitors arrived on the island; a figure only surpassed by the Dominican Republic – the most popular tourist destination in the Caribbean, registering a little over five million visitors.

Ensuring sustainable economic and social progress
Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez presided over the opening ceremony of the 10th International Convention on the Environment and Development, being held in Havana’s Convention Center until July 10. While opulence and poverty coexist, while a minority holds the resources that hundreds of millions of people lack, there will be no genuinely viable options for progress, said Elba Rosa Pérez Montoya, Cuban minister of Science, Technology and Environment.

Women’s lives are the priority
On July 11, 1987, the world population reached five billion. From then on, the United Nations General Assembly recommended that World Population Day be celebrated on this date every year.
In less than 30 years, the total number of people on the planet has risen by over two billion, in a context marked by social, environmental and economic crises and natural disasters. GI spoke to Jesús Robles Vera, international programs coordinator of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Cuba, regarding initiatives to celebrate the date and population issues on the post-2015 development agenda.

Fidel visits Food Industry Research Institute
On the afternoon of July 3, Fidel held a four-hour-long meeting with 19 master cheese makers from MINAL’s (Ministry of Food Industry) Food Industry Research Institute in the town of Guatao. During the encounter – where Fidel expressed his thoughts on problems affecting food production levels, such as climate change and wars – topics relating the former quality and quantity of cheese manufacturing in the country through the Special Period and the need recover said standards were discussed in depth.

Statement by the revolutionary government of Cuba
On July 1st, 2015, the President of the Councils of State and of Ministers of the Republic of Cuba, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, and the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, exchanged letters through which they confirmed their decision to re-establish diplomatic relations between the two countries and open permanent diplomatic missions in the respective capitals as from July 20, 2015.

Cuba Ready to Share New Achievements in Maternal and Child Health
Cuban Health Minister Roberto Morales, expressed today the will of the island to share the experiences that turned it into the world’s first country without mother to child transmission of HIV/AIDS and syphilis.
We reaffirm our commitment to continue helping other nations in access and universal health care coverage, giving priority to the prevention of such diseases, said the Cuban Helth Minister in an interview with Prensa Latina, after receiving the recognition that was made official here by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

Pope Francis to visit Havana, Holguín and Santiago de Cuba
A rities of the Vatican, the Cuban government and Conference of Cuban CatholicBishops have organized a program for Pope Francis’ forthcoming visit to the country, which will take place, as previously announced, from September 19-22. The Cuban government and citizens of the capital will welcome the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church on September 9 when he arrives in Havana to begin his apostolic visit. The following day he will hold a mass in the Plaza de la Revolución “José Martí,” visit the President of the Councils of State and Ministers, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, and meet with priests, believers and seminaries in the Cathedral of Havana. He will also greet the youth in the Félix Varela Cultural Center.

Elián González: “The youth aren’t the future, they’re the present”
