The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Pertierra´s journals describe the testimony, evidence, legal skirmishes, quirks and follies of this very historic trial that features for the first time the close collaboration of the United States government with Cuban authorities to prosecute an ex CIA agent who is one of the masterminds of the fifty-year old dirty war against Cuba.

U.S. Transportation Secretary to visit Cuba
That same day regular direct commercial flights between the two nations will officially resume with the arrival of a JetBlue Airbus A-320 to Santa Clara International Airport, from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, as part of the implementation process of the Memorandum of Understanding between Cuba and the United States, signed in February, 2016.

Cuba sends condolences following earthquake in Italy
The Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP) sent a message of condolence in solidarity with Italy following the earthquake which struck the European nation on August 24, reported the Cuban Foreign Ministry. The message, signed by ICAP President Kenia Serrano, was published on the Ministry website.

All set for the reestablishment of regular commercial flights between the U.S. and Cuba
After more than half a century, regular commercial flights between the United States and Cuba, which will resume at the end of the month, will operate in accordance with international security norms, as announced by senior aviation officials this Thursday, August 26, in Havana. The inaugural flight, operated by U.S. airline JetBlue, between Fort Lauderdale (Florida) and Santa Clara, will depart on Wednesday, August 31. As such regular direct flights between the two countries, which were suspended in 1961, will formally resume.

Legendary Havana hospital renovated
Despite being over 120 years old, the General Calixto García University Hospital has been revived through a series of repair and maintenance works being undertaken across several areas, which are now in their final stages. The secondary-level care facility is spread over 13 hectares and includes 37 medical departments spread over 29 pavilions, including emergencies, surgery and intensive care, all of which are attended by highly qualified and experienced health professionals.

Forests cover 30.6% of Cuba’s land area
Cuba ended 2015 with 30.6% of its territory covered by forests, a result that confirms the island’s place within the small group of developing nations that maintain sustained growth of this important environmental indicator. According to the report “Environmental Outlook: Cuba 2015”, published by the National Office of Statistics and Information (www.onei.cu), in 2010 the forest area of the archipelago was 27.6%.
