Municipal Assemblies of People’s Power Instated

The country’s 168 recently elected Municipal Assemblies of People’s Power were constituted yesterday, May 13, with the investiture of delegates elected by some 7.5 million Cubans, this past April 19 and 26. During the inaugural sessions, the assemblies elected their presidents and vice presidents by secret ballot, to serve a two and a half year term. Esteban Lazo Hernández, President of the National Assembly attended the investiture in the Havana municipality of Arroyo Naranjo, and commented that congratulations were in order for all the local electoral commissions which conducted the elections.

A New Era in French-Cuban Ties

Brief but intense, the historic visit by French President Francois Hollande to Cuba allowed strengthening bilateral ties and reaffirmed the Caribbean island”s position in the international scenario. Hollande arrived in Havana on Sunday night as part of a Caribbean tour that also included Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Bartholomew and Saint Martin, and left for Haiti on Tuesday morning.

Cuba will come off the terrorist list, but the blockade will remain intact

ON April 14, President Barack Obama notified the U.S. Congress of his decision to remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. From that date, the government must allow a period of 45 days for Congressional and public comment, before Cuba’s removal from the list becomes effective. Two weeks ago, Cuban-born Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (Republican-Florida) introduced a bill in the House of Representatives to reverse the President’s decision. However, her efforts met with resounding failure, and she was forced to withdraw the bill

Process to Restore Ties With US Is Going Well, Says Raul Castro

Cuban President Raul Castro said today that the process of re-establishing ties with the United States is going well, but we are setting ”our own pace”. Castro said that US President Barack Obama has the executive power to submit to the Congress – as he already did- the order to exclude Cuba from the State Sponsors of Terrorism List. The deadline to deal with that matter is met in a few days, said Castro referring to Obama’s decision to exclude Cuba from the list, and announced that then they will move on to appoint each country ambassadors.

Arrangements for Pope Francis” Visit to Cuba Begin

A meeting among representatives of the Holy See, members of the Catholic Church and civil authorities from Cuba was held as part of the arrangements for the visit of Pope Francis to the Caribbean island in September. During the meeting, held yesterday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participants expressed the full willingness of the Cuban State and government to offer all the necessary support for the success of the apostolic visit of His Holiness to the Caribbean nation.

President Raul Castro Returned to Havana

President Raul Castro returned to this capital yesterday night after a tour of Algeria, Russia and Italy, nations that showed a great hospitality towards the Caribbean nation. Raul Castro was welcomed at the Jose Marti International Airport by Vice President Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, and Interior Minister, Army Corps General Abelardo Colome Ibarra. During the last stage of his tour, the president was welcomed in private audience by Pope Francis for 55 minutes.

Pope Francis met Cuban President Raul Castro

Pope Francis met today with Cuban President Raul Castro in a private audience of about 55 minutes held in the halls near the Paul VI room of the Vatican. The President travels accompanied by Vicepresident of the Council of Ministers, Ricardo Cabrisas and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, among other representatives of his government. He was received by the Swiss guard of honor and the prefect of the Pontiff s House, Georg Gaenswein.

The Paradoxical theme of US tourism in Cuba

Christopher Columbus did not visit Cuba as a tourist but, withoutdoubt, he has been the leading propagandist of tourism to the Caribbean island in recorded history. According to some historians, Columbus wrote or said that it was “the most beautiful land human eyes have ever seen.” Of course, after sailing for several months across the Atlantic with only sea water in sight, the Genoese admiral may not have been completely objective in his assessment, which has served however to promote Cuba’s tourist
attractions around the world for centuries.
