Plaza del Che ready for commemoration of 50th anniversary of the heroic guerilla’s death

An intense effort has been underway at the Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara Sculpture Complex, to ready the plaza for the national commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Che’s death, October 8. Over the past several days, men and women from a variety of institutions are working jointly to return to its full glory this sacred site where the remains of Comandante Che Guevara and his comrades in arms rest, explained Noris Cárdenas Martínez, director of the Complex.

Cuban linemen conclude work in areas affected by Irma

Cuban linemen who traveled to this province to assist with the efforts to restore power following Hurricane Irma, have returned to their respective territories. After 21 days of intense work, the almost 1,000 electricity workers from Guantánamo, Granma, Las Tunas, Camagüey and Sancti Spíritus, together with locals, succeeded in restoring 99.6% of the energy system across Ciego de Ávila.

As is known, September 7-10, the country was impacted by the powerful Hurricane Irma, which caused severe coastal flooding, strong winds, and heavy rainfall, principally in the north of the island from Camagüey to Artemisa. The provinces most affected were Camagüey, Ciego de Ávila, Sancti Spíritus and Villa Clara. Others such as Guantánamo, Holguín, Las Tunas, Cienfuegos, Matanzas, Mayabeque, and La Habana also suffered damage.

The Havana Malecón preparing to reopen

After two weeks of intense work to repair damage caused by Hurricane Irma to Havana’s Malecon, parts of the avenue and its surrounding areas are set to reopen October 1.
