The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Cuba, invincible in the Baseball 5 World Cup
The Cuban team has overwhelmed its rivals in the first Baseball5 World Cup, which is being held in the Zócalo, Mexico City, and is emerging as the favorite. On Wednesday morning they defeated Hong Kong twice, with scores of 12-3 and 10-0 (knockout). They also had no mercy in the two games against the locals. That night they were awarded the first super knockout of the championship (21-0) and, later, the second knockout of the date (10-0). The Cuba team produced 53 runs on Wednesday.

Alejo O’Reilly, great Cuban baseball player, dies
One of the greatest baseball figures in Cuba: Alejo Orrelly Morejón passed away on September 1, 2022, the National Baseball Directorate confirmed on its Twitter account. “Pain in Cuban Baseball due to the death of Alejo O’Reilly Morejón. He shone for Ciego de Ávila during 16 National Series in which he batted for 303, with 240 home runs and 910 runs batted in, and represented Cuba with dignity. Our condolences to family and friends,” the agency wrote on the social network.

For the first time ever, Cuban baseball out of Olympic competition
Cuba, once again, was defeated by Canada. The national team had a chance against the northerners, just as was the case against Venezuela, but came up short in attention to the details, that count big-time in baseball. There were too many mistakes for a game of vital importance: The opening pitcher failed again and was replaced in the first inning.

Cuba assures its right to participate in the Americas’ pre-Olympic baseball competition
After weeks of delays, on the afternoon of May 25, the Cuban Baseball Federation (FCB) was notified of the emission of visas requested at the U.S. embassy in Havana for our national baseball team to travel to the state of Florida, to compete in the continental pre-Olympic tournament of the Americas, intent upon qualifying for the Tokyo Games.
“Cuba is grateful to all the institutions and individuals who, with good will and active interventions, contributed to overcoming the multiple obstacles to guaranteeing the participation of our national baseball team in the pre-Olympic in Florida,” stated Party Political Bureau member and Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla.

Another title for Carlos Martí
Of all the experiences he has accumulated over his more than 50 years devoted to baseball – including 46 leading championship teams in Cuba – veteran manager Carlos Martí Santos will hold onto this memory with special affection: his third title with Granma’s Alazanes (Stallions), won with a fourth victory over the Matanzas Crocodiles in game six of the final series.

Cuban baseball to participate in Caribbean Cup
The Cuban Baseball Federation has expressed interest in participating in the third edition of the Caribbean Baseball Cup, to be held in Curaçao next April. Higinio Vélez, head of the organization, told Jit that the tournament will include teams from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Panama, Peru, Chile and Aruba. Ernesto Reinoso, national baseball Commissioner, reported that the Cuban team will include members of the pre-selection group to be designated with semifinals currently underway.

Caribbean Series begins without Cuba, excluded for deplorable political reasons
The Caribbean Baseball Series opened February 1 in Puerto Rico, with Cuba excluded, due to pressure from the United States and a deplorable political decision. Left out of the event at Puerto Rico’s Hiram Bithorn Stadium, was the nation that hosted the first edition of the classic in 1949. Nor do we forget that, in 1966, the U.S. government denied Cuban players visas to participate in the Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico an injustice that led to the historic Cerro Pelado adventure.

A party for the guests
Happy with the result and in a good mood, Panamanian manager Manuel Rodríguez, said that this Caribbean Series was a party for the guests, referring to the fact that his team and Cuba’s, which met in the final, attended by invitation.
