Delegates to the Eighth Party Congress to be elected March 4

logo congrerso pccThe 11th plenary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee, in December of 2019, agreed that the Eighth Congress would be held April 16-19, 2021. During this past year, amidst other important tasks and the additional complexities involved in confronting the COVID-19 pandemic, steps were taken to prepare for the event. On December 2, 2020, the Congress convocation was issued, along with the topics to be addressed.

On February 9, this year, the Political Bureau analyzed and reaffirmed the scheduling of the Congress. During these first months of 2021, a broad, democratic process of election of the pre-candidates for delegate to the Congress took place in grassroots branches, from which thousands of valuable proposals emerged.

This Thursday, March 4, in strict compliance with established sanitary protocols, plenary sessions of Party Provincial Committees will be held, during which the delegation from each province to the Eighth Congress will be elected.

Once elected, the delegates will receive the documents to be submitted for discussion and approval at the event. In each province, March 15-20, study sessions will be held, to discuss, clarify and analyze the proposed documents, also in strict compliance with physical distancing and other hygienic-sanitary measures. All opinions emerging during these meetings will be collected and evaluated by the Congress working commissions.

It should be recalled that prior to the Sixth Congress, a broad debate took place within the Party, in communities and workplaces, from which the Economic and Social Policy Guidelines of the Party and the Revolution emerged, which were later updated, while work on their implementation continues.

After the Seventh Congress, the Conceptualization of our socialist development model and the Bases of the plan through 2030 were submitted for analysis and improvement by members of the Party and Young Communist League, as well as broad sectors of the population.

Likewise, in 2018, a transcendental debate was held throughout the country on the nation’s new Constitution, which was approved by an overwhelming majority in 2019, reaffirming the socialist course outlined and agreed upon.

Over these coming days, Granma will publish articles with information of interest on topics to be discussed at the party event.
