Díaz-Canel: I invite you to defend Cuba, with renewed strength

Miguel D CanelBuenos Aires, Argentina – Last night, heartfelt words abounded, when the President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, attended a meeting in this city with members of the community of Cubans living in Argentina, as has become customary during his trips abroad.

What began with the national anthem, and continued with Alexander Abreu’s “Me dicen Cuba,” ended as a meeting between brothers and sisters, who – within and beyond the island – confirmed their love for the country. Díaz-Canel stated, “I invite you to defend Cuba with renewed strength, because the Homeland is all of us.”

He shared with participants the certainty that the strengthening of ties between the island and Cubans living abroad is an ongoing, irreversible process, a spirit reflected in the successive updates of migration policy in 2013, 2016 and 2018, the President noted.

“The measures adopted during the Presidency of Army General Raúl Castro Ruz and currently, confirm the continuity of this process,” he continued.

He commented on the annual increase in the number of Cubans who travel abroad and return to the country; as well as the number of Cubans residing permanently abroad who apply to regain this status in Cuba.

As an example of the close ties that the country’s maintains with Cubans living around the world, he mentioned the successful scholarship program for the Cuban émigré community, through which their children can benefit. “To date, 124 scholarships have been awarded in 41 countries, and 61 students have graduated,” he said.

Emphasizing the defense of the homeland as a priority in meetings of Cubans living abroad, he reported that the IV Regional Meeting of Cubans residing in Latin America and the Caribbean, was held October 19-20 in Mexico City, with 75 delegates from 13 countries participating.
