Tropical storm Erika approaching Cuba

mapa meteorologíaThe National Meteorological Institute’s Weather Forecast Center issued a category nine warning as Tropical Storm Erika approaches Cuba’s eastern region. Territories from Guantánamo to Ciego de Ávila are expect to experience heavy and localized rainfall this Saturday, in addition to strong winds and gusts which could reach up to 65–100 km/h as Erika moves north-westwards.

Citizens are advised to follow the directions of the Civil Defence, bearing in mind the strong winds and rains that are forecast to affect the region.

At midday today, Erika was located near latitude 17.8 North and longitude 69.7 West, some 70km southeast of Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic.

Erica continues to see maximum wind speeds of 85km/h with stronger gusts and an atmospheric pressure of 1008hPa.
During the next 12-24 hours Erika is forecast to continue to move northwest. The storm has already passed through the Dominican Republic, and is likely to pass by or over Cuba’s eastern region on Saturday morning.
