The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Pertierra´s journals describe the testimony, evidence, legal skirmishes, quirks and follies of this very historic trial that features for the first time the close collaboration of the United States government with Cuban authorities to prosecute an ex CIA agent who is one of the masterminds of the fifty-year old dirty war against Cuba.

Cuba and the U.S. sign cancer research agreement

The agreement, signed by Dr. Roberto Morales Ojeda, Cuban minister of Public Health, and Sylvia Burwell, U.S. secretary of Health and Human Services, involves the implementation of collaboration projects, meetings, conferences and workshops, as well as promoting exchanges of information and best practices, research, monitoring, follow-up, and forms of cooperation related to the control of cancer, a major health problem in both countries and across the world.

Cuba registers new skin cancer medicine

After 20 years of research and clinical trials, Cuba’s Havana-based Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center (CIGB) has developed a new medicine called “Heberferon.” BiologistIraldo Bello, who participated in the process, described the drug which combines interferón “Alfa” and interferón “Gamma” through the use of recombinant technology at the CIGB – as “unique” in the world.

Legendary Havana hospital renovated

Despite being over 120 years old, the General Calixto García University Hospital has been revived through a series of repair and maintenance works being undertaken across several areas, which are now in their final stages. The secondary-level care facility is spread over 13 hectares and includes 37 medical departments spread over 29 pavilions, including emergencies, surgery and intensive care, all of which are attended by highly qualified and experienced health professionals.

Natural medicine facilities to be certified

At least ten local Natural and Traditional Medicine (MNT) production facilities, across the same number of Cuban provinces, are set to receive certification for meeting best pharmaceutical practice standards by the end of this year, according to a sector expert. Speaking to ACN, Johann Perdomo Delgado, head of the Ministry of Health’s MNT department, confirmed that centers of this kind are based in Artemisa, Mayabeque, Matanzas, Villa Clara, Sancti Spíritus, Ciego de Ávila, Camagüey, Las Tunas, Holguín and Santiago de Cuba.

Message on world tobacco day : 31 may 2016

Cigarettes and other tobacco products kill almost 6 million people every year. Sustainable Development Goal 3 aims to “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”. As part of that approach, governments have committed to strengthen the implementation of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in all countries to reduce the proportion of people who use tobacco.

Cubans 60 years of age and older reach 19.4% of the population

Cuba ended 2015 with an estimated population of 11,239,004 inhabitants, only 727 people more than last year, for a growth rate of 0.06 per 1,000, according to the National Statistics and Information Office’s Center for Population and Development Studies, published on the website www.onei.cu.

Cuba treats 800 children from Chernobyl

The island was one of the first nations to respond to the tragedy and offer help in the form of rehabilitation treatment to those affected, the majority children. Cuban doctor Julio Medina, coordinator of the program, reported that to date the Cuban government has provided treatment to some 24,000 children.

Ninth imported case of Zika virus confirmed

The ninth imported case of Zika virus has been confirmed in a Cuban from the municipality of Cotorro, Havana, residing in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, who arrived in the country on April 8.
