The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Pertierra´s journals describe the testimony, evidence, legal skirmishes, quirks and follies of this very historic trial that features for the first time the close collaboration of the United States government with Cuban authorities to prosecute an ex CIA agent who is one of the masterminds of the fifty-year old dirty war against Cuba.

The road to collaboration

Potential for scientific exchange between Cuba and the United States highlighted in Havana
The Director of the Center of Molecular Immunology in Cuba, Dr, Agustín Lage, noted the potential for scientific exchange between Cuba and the United States, while announcing further steps to strengthen links in this sector.
Dr. Lage announced during a press conference this Sunday morning in Havana, that Cuban biotechnology products could begin to be used by U.S. patients, as more than 30 Cuban patents have been approved by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

January, a good month for tourism
According to figures released by the National Office of Information and Statistics (ONEI), 2016 has begun with positive results for the tourist sector. A report published on the ONEI website reveals that January saw the arrival of 417,764 tourists to Cuba, a 12.7% increase as compared to the same period last year, when 370,830 visited the island.

Billion peso investment in Cuban energy and mines
Speaking to the press, the official from the Ministry of Energy and Mines noted that investments in 2015 amounted to around one billion pesos, representing 94.9% fulfillment of the scheduled plan. He described 2015 as a good year for activities in the sector, which saw key industries achieve high levels of production.

Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, a Council of Ministers vice president, held a working meeting in the afternoon of Wednesday, March 2, with Rudolf Scholten, director general of the Austrian Control Bank. The two undertook a comprehensive analysis of the current situation and the outlook for economic, commercial and financial relations between the two countries, considering the results of the Cuba-Austria Business Forum, held earlier that the day.

A week of celebrations for the Habano
A haze of smoke still hangs in the air following the celebrations of the 18th Habano Festival, the largest international event for enthusiasts of the best tobacco in the world. The festival brought more than 2,000 participants from over 60 countries to the Cuban capital, from February 29 to March 4.
