The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Two days ago on Friday October 14th, Granma and Juventud Rebelde, the Communist Party and Youth League newspapers, published a brave and energetic message from René González, Hero of the Republic, to the people of Cuba, after the odious and unfair 13-year punishment had finished, separately, like the other four heroes who are serving longer sentences in prisons that are hundreds of miles away from each other.

Cuban Antiterrorist Calls to Continue Struggle to free Cuban Five
Cuban anti-terrorist Rene Gonzalez, who is on probation in the United States, called to continue fighting for the release of his four fellow countrymen, who have been imprisoned in the United States since 1998. Rene Gonzalez, along with Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero and Gerardo Hernandez were severely condemned for reporting terrorist plans against Cuba, which were forged by terrorist groups based in the state of Florida.

Cuba Awaits Strong Condemnation to US Blockade
Cuba is awaiting the international community once again pronounces against the economic, financial and commercial blockade of the US government against the Caribbean island for more than 50 years, declared Cuban Ambassador to Caracas Rogelio Polanco. The Cuban diplomat told Prensa Latina that the authorities of Cuba will present a resolution on the negative consequences of the blockade to Cuba, for the consecutive 20th time, before the United Nations Organization’s General Assembly.

“Obama’s Chance to Distance Himself from Bush”
Thanksgiving is near and, following an old American tradition, President Barack Obama might decide to release the four Cubans accused of espionage who are jailed in different US prisons, on the basis of documents of the Court of Appeals and the Justice Department. The documents concluded at the time that there was no evidence that the arrested Cubans had spied on the government and that the sentences passed by the Miami court were illegal and disproportionate.

Welcome to America’s war on terrorism (fighters)… continued
On Friday, October 7, René González will become the first member of the Cuban Five to be released from an American prison. In 2001, the Five were convicted in Miami of spying for Cuba. Cuba insists they were—justifiably—trying to prevent anti-Castro exiles from launching terrorist attacks against their homeland. The Five have since become heroes in Cuba, and their case has sparked international controversy—as has González’s pending release. Last week, the same Florida judge who originally sentenced him decided González must remain in Florida during his parole rather than granting his request to return home to his family in Havana. Why?

A message from the Cuban Five on the execution of Troy Davis
We feel deeply the horrific execution of Troy Davis. It is another terrible injustice and stain on the history of this country. We join in the pain felt by his relatives, friends and brothers across the world. Now we have another cause, another flag, to pursue our struggle for a better world for all, free of the death penalty and barbarism.

Judge Lenard’s Cruel and Bizarre Decision against Rene
On Friday, September 16, a federal district court judge made a bizarre ruling concerning one of the Cuban Five defendants who completes his jail sentence on October 7. Judge Joan Lenard ruled that René Gonzalez, who has already served thirteen years in a federal penitentiary for being an unregistered agent of the Cuban government, will be forced for the next three years to live in Miami on what is called “supervised release.”

On March 7, 2011, the Government filed its response in opposition (“Response,” D.E. 1814), to which Defendant filed his reply (“Reply,” D.E. 1817), on March 25, 2011.

UN High Commissioner Updated on Case of Cuban 5
The UN high commissioner for human rights, Navi Pillay, was informed on Friday about the situation of five Cuban antiterrorists held in U.S. prisons. Ambassador Rodolfo Reyes, Cuba’s permanent representative to the UN, sent a letter to Pillay about the case of Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, and Rene Gonzalez, known as the Cuban Five.
