2:30 PM – Departure time, the most excruciating part of visiting Gerardo Hernandez. A prison guard announced: “Visiting hours are over.” Gerardo lined up against the wall with the other inmates. We stood with wives, children and mothers. Finally, the electronically controlled, heavy metal door opened. Gerardo held up a triumphant fist. We did the same. He stayed in Hell (13 years now). We left.

As part of the World Campaign “Gimme 5 for The Cuban Five,” workers, students and other sectors demand on Monday in Havana the release of the Cuban antiterrorist fighters unjustly serving long sentences in the United States. Musical meetings, exchanges with relatives of the Cuban Five, as they are universally known, and the launching of books are part of the activities.

La Colmenita theater troupe will perform its play 'Abracadabra' at Hostos Friday night.

THE STORY of the Cuban Five is a complicated one, but that’s not stopping a troupe of child actors from tackling history. The Cuban children’s theater group La Colmenita (Little Beehive) will mix fantasy and reality to tell the tale of these Cuban national heroes tonight at Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture. The play, “Abracadabra,” speaks to a top concern among Cubans, said Carlos Alberto Cremata, who founded the group in 1990.

Today, October 16, was another beautiful day in this tour of the U.S. capital. We had the enormous pleasure of visiting the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum where we had many moving experiences, among them the unforgettable Planetarium, the Apollo 10, and the first flight of the Wright brothers.

La Colmenita’s First Performance in Washington (+ Video)

La Colmenita’s first performance in Washington DC was extraordinary. The audience began arriving at the Kay Chapel at American University at 5:30 p.m. even though the performance was not to begin until 7. People of all ages arrived along with plenty of children. The chapel filled up. Two young parents with their small children came from New Jersey, driving four hours to attend the event because they’d been unable to see the troupe when it was in New York.

Cuban Children’s Theater Director Responds to Harsh Attack by Prominent U.S. Congresswoman

The director of a Cuban children’s theater group touring the U.S. expressed dismay Tuesday that the chair of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs would use her political power to try and stop them from delivering a message of peace, love and cultural understanding. In a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Florida) demanded to know why the troupe, La Colmenita, was given visas and whether any taxpayer money was used for the trip. She also called on the White House to end all cultural exchanges between the U.S. and Cuba.
