The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Pertierra´s journals describe the testimony, evidence, legal skirmishes, quirks and follies of this very historic trial that features for the first time the close collaboration of the United States government with Cuban authorities to prosecute an ex CIA agent who is one of the masterminds of the fifty-year old dirty war against Cuba.

Casa Award Winner Calls for Anti-Racial Policies
Cuban essayist Zuleica Romay, who won the special 2012 Casa de las Americas Literature Award on black presence in the contemporary Americas and the Caribbean, called for cultural policies to face today’s stereotypes and racist behaviors.After receiving the award, the author of “Elogio de la Altea o las Paradojas de la Racialidad” (Altea Praise and Racial Paradoxes), told Prensa Latina that the the work allows her to appreciate racial prejudices through socio-cultural processes that are often covert.

Conference of Cuba’s Communist Party to Begin on Saturday
The 1st National Conference of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) will begin on Saturday to assess the work of that political organization objectively and critically, Granma newspaper reported on Friday. According to the source, the conference will respond to the agreements reached at the 6th PCC Congress. Its opening date was chose to celebrate the 159th birthday of National Hero Jose Marti.

Prensa Latina to Launch Book on Bolivian Indigenous People
The book “Abya Yala: An Indigenous View”, containing a foreword by Bolivian President Evo Morales, will be launched at the International Book Fair of Havana, scheduled from February 9-19.The book belongs to the collection Letras Urgentes (Urgent Lyrics), published by Prensa Latina’s publishing house, whose purpose is to address current Latin American and the Caribbean issues based on the contributions from the news agency’s correspondents and experts in Havana.

Cuba Calls Annual Scientific Meeting on Neurology
The Havana-based Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery will hold its Annual Scientific Meeting from January 23 to 27, as part of festivities on the 50th anniversary of that institution. Prestigious Cuban and foreign professionals will give pre-meeting updating courses and conferences, and researchers will present their works, said the announcement.

Cuba to Host 8th Intl Music and Poetry Festival
A homage to the 110th birthday of Cuban National Poet Nicolas Guillen (1902-1989) will be the 8th Nicolas Guillen International Colloquium and Music and Poetry Festival.Organized by the Nicolas Guillen Foundation, the event, set from April 2 to 6, will also mark the 200th anniversary of the Aponte Conspiracy (1812), and the 100th anniversary of the brutal repression of the Independientes de Color (an organization of Free Blacks), said Nicolas Hernandez Guillen, head of the foundation and grandson of the poet.

Eduardo Galeano: Cuba Is Always Alive Inside of Me
“Cuba is always alive inside of me, in my words, in my actions, in my memory,” said Uruguayan writer and journalist Eduardo Galeano upon his arrival at Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport on Thursday. Galeano, who will inaugurate the 53rd Casa de las Americas Literary Prize in Havana next Monday, was welcomed by Cuban poet Roberto Fernandez Retamar, president of the Casa de las Americas cultural center.

Yesterday I had the satisfaction of having a pleasant conversation with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. I had not seen him since 2006, more than five years ago, when he visited our country to participate in the 14th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement of Countries in Havana. During the summit, Cuba was elected for the second time as president of the organization for a three-year term.

Visiting Gerardo and comparing Gross with the Cuban Five
2:30 PM – Departure time, the most excruciating part of visiting Gerardo Hernandez. A prison guard announced: “Visiting hours are over.” Gerardo lined up against the wall with the other inmates. We stood with wives, children and mothers. Finally, the electronically controlled, heavy metal door opened. Gerardo held up a triumphant fist. We did the same. He stayed in Hell (13 years now). We left.
