The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Pertierra´s journals describe the testimony, evidence, legal skirmishes, quirks and follies of this very historic trial that features for the first time the close collaboration of the United States government with Cuban authorities to prosecute an ex CIA agent who is one of the masterminds of the fifty-year old dirty war against Cuba.

How is the President elected in Cuba?
The person who becomes the President of Cuba’s Council of State is chosen through a process that entails several steps, with the people and their elected representatives participating directly. There is no need to dig through Cuba’s Election Law no.72, dated October 29, 1992, to find the answer. It is explicit, and Dr. José Luis Toledo Santander, president of the National Assembly of People’s Power Constitutional and Legal Affairs Commission, gets right to the point.

How do elections work in Cuba?
THE Cuban election system is different from all others that exist around the world, and is young institutionally. Established in the 1976 Constitution, which took effect on February 24 that year, the People’s Power structure has been in place for more than 40 years. Among the elements that characterize elections here is the term unity, essential for the protection of the country’s independence. The country is led by a single party, that is not electoral in nature, does not nominate candidates, but serves as the guiding force in state affairs and society.

Cuban and French Officials Meet
Cuba’s First Deputy Foreign Minister, Marcelino Medina, held a working meeting with Maurice Gourdault-Montagne, Secretary General of the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. According to a statement, the meeting checked the French government’s willingness to give continuity to the progress made in the bilateral relationship, following President Francois Hollande’s visit to Havana in May 2015 and Cuban head of State Raúl Castro’s stay in Paris in February 2016.

Unilateral decision by the United States government is politically motivated
The decision by the United States Government, which unilaterally maintains the drawdown of its staff at the U.S. Embassy in Cuba indefinitely, is politically motivated and has no relation whatsoever to the safety and security of its officials in Havana, said the General Director for U.S. Affairs of the Cuban Foreign Ministry, Carlos Fernández de Cossío in his statement to the press.

Dynamic test ensures all arrangements in place for upcoming elections

U.S. makes cuts to embassy staff in Havana official
From March 5, the United States Embassy in Havana will operate as an “unaccompanied post,” according to an official media note from the U.S. Department of State, published March 2. The document explains that “The U.S. Embassy in Havana has operated under ordered departure status since September 29, 2017, due to health attacks affecting U.S. Embassy Havana employees.

The peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean come together in Lima
