The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. White House: We will continue to pursue increased engagement between the United States and Cuba

Exactly one year after the historic announcements of December 17, 2014, the White House issued a fact sheet this Thursday outlining the progress made in relations between the U.S. and Cuba. The document stresses that the Barack Obama administration’s new approach has allowed for “the re-establishment of diplomatic relations and adjusted regulations to facilitate greater travel, commerce, people-to-people ties, and the free flow of information to, from, and within Cuba.”

Cuba officially has an ambassador in the United States

This Thursday, September 17, Cuban diplomat José Ramón Cabañas presented his credentials to the President of the United States, Barack Obama, to officially become the first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the island to Washington in over half a century. “Exchanging ambassadors since ancient times is a sign of normality and respect among nations,” Cabañas told Granma.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower broke diplomatic relations with Cuba on January 3, 1961. Fifty-four years later, on Monday the 20th of July, the United States and Cuba will advance toward normalization of diplomatic relations. Presumably, the US will no longer treat Cuba as its enemy and treat the island simply as its next-door neighbor. Maybe … The raising of the flags at the embassies on the 20th of July is much anticipated. But what does this all really mean?

Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marcelino Medina Rodriguez, received during today’s morning, at the venue of the Chancery, the chief of the United States Interests Section in Havana, Mr. Jeffrey DeLaurentis, who conveyed a letter from president Barack Obama addressed to Army General Raul Castro Ruz, president of the Councils of State and Ministers, confirming the decision to re-establish the diplomatic relations between the two countries and to open permanent diplomatic missions in the respective capitals, beginning July 20th, 2015.

Term to Avoid Cuba”s Removal from Blacklist Expires in USA

The U.S. Congress has until today to decide on Cuba”s exclusion from the State Department”s list of alleged countries sponsoring international terrorism. The 45-day term will expire today. It was stipulated so the legislators -particularly those reluctant to the approach started in December 2014 between Washington and Havana- speak in favor of the decision notified on April 14 by President Barack Obama.

Tom Wilner: Obama has the Presidential Authority to Return Guantanamo to Cuba

He is one of the most famous attorneys in Washington and perhaps the only one to have won several cases before the United States Supreme Court, and the system has changed the laws to return to the starting point. Thomas B. Wilner represented the detainees of Guantanamo in the trial that established their right to receive legal counsel, and in the two decisions where the Supreme Court confirmed the right of these detainees to habeas corups, but justice still remains to be done.
