The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Pertierra´s journals describe the testimony, evidence, legal skirmishes, quirks and follies of this very historic trial that features for the first time the close collaboration of the United States government with Cuban authorities to prosecute an ex CIA agent who is one of the masterminds of the fifty-year old dirty war against Cuba.

Díaz-Canel receives Mexican Foreign Minister
Yesterday afternoon, October 19, First Vice President of Cuba’s Councils of State and Ministers Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez met Mexican Foreign Relations Secretary, the honorable Ms. Claudia Ruiz Massieu Salinas. During the fraternal meeting the two leaders discussed the historic ties between their peoples; the positive state of bilateral relations; the existent political commitment to strengthen and expand the relationship in spheres with untapped potential; in addition to issues of regional and international interest.

Production of crude oil reaches 1 million tons in western Cuba
Cuba’s Western Oil Drilling and Extraction Enterprise reached 1 million tons of crude oil thus far this year, a result of investments undertaken and the use of new technology. The goal is now to reach the remaining 30,000 ton target by the end of December, as outlined in the company’s technical economic plan. Meeting this objective will see the company celebrate 16 consecutive years producing over 1 million metric tons of crude oil.

Ricardo Cabrisas in Moscow
Yesterday, October 19, Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, a Council of Ministers vice president and co-president of the Cuban delegation to the Cuba-Russia Intergovernmental Commission began a visit in Moscow with a meeting with Sergei Glazyev, advisor to the President of the Russian Federation on topics relating to Eurasian integration, during which the two officials discussed the possibility of Cuba joining the Eurasian Economic Union as an observer nation.

New Confucius Institute headquarters opened in Havana
After six years of work, the University of Havana’s Confucius Institute finally has a permanent headquarters, located in the building which was once home to the old Pacífico restaurant, an emblematic structure in the capital’s China Town. The completely renovated facility was inaugurated October 14, in a ceremony which saw the participation of Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, first vice president of Cuba’s Councils of State and Ministers.

U.S. blockade hampers exports of Cuban citrus fruit
The economic, commercial, financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba for more than 50 years, hampers export of Cuban citrus and other fresh fruit, causing significant losses to growers and the national economy. The blockade does not allow the country to sell grapefruit in U.S. territory, obliging the sector to focus on industrial processing to produce juice, pulp, concentrate and essential oils for export to Europe and Asia.

Buena Vista Social Club performs at the White House
This Thursday, October 15, the legendary group Buena Vista Social Club, performed for the first time in the White House, after conquering stages around the world. The musicians received various ovations from almost 400 guests, among them President Barack Obama and Cuban Ambassador in Washington, José Cabañas, performing the same repertory which has seen them reap numerous international awards, featuring greatly relevant songs which capture the spirit of Cuba’s musical tradition.
