US Legislator Asks Tillerson Return of Diplomats to Cuba

Kathy-CastorDemocratic Representative Kathy Castor requested U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, the return of diplomats and consular officials to the U.S. Embassy in Cuba to change the situation in that facility today.

‘I am very concerned about the absence of personnel in the Embassy, especially in the consular services, and with the consequent negative impact on families, educational, religious and cultural exchanges between the Cuban and the U.S. people,’ the lawmaker wrote in a letter.

According to the congresswoman from Florida, who recalled in the letter a recent visit to Havana as part of a bicameral delegation from her party, it is also worrisome that the United States lacks a strong diplomatic presence on the Caribbean island.

On September 29, the State Department announced the withdrawal of more than half of its personnel in that facility, in response to health incidents reported by its officials about which there are no conclusive results so far.

‘While I appreciate your primary concern with the health and safety of our diplomats after the unexplained health incidents, it is time to increase the staff and reestablish a U.S. presence to serve our interests and citizens,’ said Castor.

He recalled that the Department of State must determine a course of actions regarding the situation of the Embassy in Cuba on March 4.
