Elections in Cuba Without Campaigns or Politicking, Says a Candidate

elecciones_cuba_14jun2017The Cuban electoral process takes place in a clean manner and without the hustle and bustle of the political campaigns, said Carlos Rafael Fuentes, one of the 605 candidates for the Cuban Parliament.

In statements to Prensa Latina, the official of the National Assembly of the People’s Power stated that these days the candidates for deputies make tours of the country, particularly the territories in which they were nominated, in view of the appointment at the polls of March 11.

It is about contacts with the people to present ourselves to local voters and interact with them, something far removed from the politicking that in the past marked the processes of elections in Cuba, before the revolution of January 1, 1959, he said.

According to Fuentes, in those meetings there is a dialogue with workers, students and citizens, who have the possibility to ask and express their concerns, explained the candidate for deputy.

More than eight million Cubans are summoned on March 11 to elect the 605 members of the National Assembly and 1,245 delegates to the Provincial Assemblies, after they selected at the end of last year 12,515 members of the Municipal Assemblies.

‘I can describe my experience in the meetings with the voters as impressive because people meet spontaneously and show interest in the process,’ said Fuentes.
