primero de mayo desfile panoramicaMassive, conscious participation is our goal this May Day, to reaffirm our unity and commitment, stated Luis Manuel Castanedo Smith, secretary general of the Federation of Cuban Workers (CTC) in Havana, during a plenary session of the trade union leadership, held yesterday, April 28.

Castanedo recalled the significant anniversaries that are being celebrated this year, during the meeting in Lazaro Peña Theater at the CTC national headquarters: the 55th of the Literacy Campaign; the 60th of the Granma landing; the 55th of the Playa Girón victory and the proclamation of the socialist nature of the Cuban Revolution – and especially the upcoming 90th birthday of Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro.

He emphasized that the march will provide an opportunity to reaffirm Cuban workers’ support for the agreements reached at the recent 7th Party Congress and commitment to the construction of a sovereign, independent, prosperous nation, while demanding an end to the U.S. blockade and the return of territory illegally occupied by the Guantánamo Naval Base.

He announced that contingents will begin gathering at assigned locations in Havana at 2:30am, during the dawn hours Sunday, and the march will kick off at 7:30am, while confirming that first aid, water, public bathrooms and transportation are all well organized.

Also participating were several members of the Party Political Bureau: Mercedes López Acea, first Party secretary in the capital; Ulises Guilarte de Nacimiento, general secretary of the CTC; Salvador Valdés Mesa, a Council of State vice president; and Teresa Amarelle Boué, secretary general of the Federation of Cuban Women.
