Venezuela Presidential Election Campaign Set to Begin

Caracas, Apr 1 (Prensa Latina) Venezuela is on the verge of the campaign launch for the presidential elections scheduled on April 14, and candidates supported by various political organizations are taking their places.

The focus is on two main candidates, Nicolas Maduro, of the Great Patriotic Pole and the opposition candidate, Henrique Capriles, representative of the so-called Democratic Unity Table (MUD).

So far, opinion polls show Maduro, the acting president, to be leading the race by close to 20 points.

Yesterday, a survey from the Venezuelan Institute for Data Analysis was released, revealing that 53.8 percent of respondents within a group of 1,200 people surveyed between March 19 and 23 said they would vote for Maduro, while barely 30.8 percent favored Capriles.

Moreover, candidates have already planned the locales where they will begin their campaigns: on Tuesday, April 2, Maduro will begin in the state of Barinas, birthplace of the deceased president Hugo Chavez, in tribute to the Venezuelan leader.

Capriles will start in Maturin, in the state of Monagas, but had also previously announced Barinas, something that government authorities consider a provocation.

In this regard the Acting President said that rightwing sectors cannot conceal their hate and envy for the late Comandante and his work.

Tomorrow at 06:00 local time, the electoral campaign will begin and will continue until April 11 at midnight.
