APEC Statement for Food and Energy Security

Moscow, Sep 9 (Prensa Latina) The Final Statement of the summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) is for food and energy security and the struggle against corruption, as well as a solution to the European crisis.

The document approved in Vladivostok says it is necessary to increase agriculture productivity and guarantee good working and investment conditions to small growers.

The statement is also for broadening the access to food items by the most vulnerable strata of the population and for the rational use of maritime resources and the struggle against illegal fishing and smuggling in the sector.

It also calls for an open, stable, foreseeable food transportation system.

Regarding energy security, APEC considers necessary to increase the presence of natural gas in the energy balance of the region, without ruling out atomic energy prospects.

It sets the target to curb APEC energy expenses by 45 percent by 2035 as compared to 2005.

The document refers to the crisis in the European Union and welcomes the bloc’s decision to guarantee the permanence of the Eurozone despite the regional debt crisis.
