Syrian Issue Captures UN Activity

United Nations, Apr 5 (Prensa Latina) The situation in Syria on Thursday takes up the UN activity with discussions about the issue at the General Assembly and the Security Council.

The first forum, comprised of all 193 UN member States, will be briefed by UN Special Envoy for Syria Kofi Annan, who will talk about the course of his efforts on a videoconference.

Meanwhile, the Security Council on Thursday must approve a statement boosted by the United States, France and Great Britain, to force Damascus to comply with the April 10 deadline to stop military activities in urban centers.

Annan’s announced meeting with the General Assembly will take place three days after he held a similar contact with all 15

members of the Security Council.

At the time, the former UN secretary general revealed the Syrian government’s decision to complete the withdrawal of its military forces from urban centers and the ceasefire on April 10.

Both actions are some of the aspects included in a six-item plan presented by Annan to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, during a visit to Damascus three weeks ago.
