The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Pertierra´s journals describe the testimony, evidence, legal skirmishes, quirks and follies of this very historic trial that features for the first time the close collaboration of the United States government with Cuban authorities to prosecute an ex CIA agent who is one of the masterminds of the fifty-year old dirty war against Cuba.

First Vice President meets with senior UN official
Cuban First Vice President Miguel Díaz-Canel, received Helen Clark, administrator of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), on a work visit to the island.
According to Prensa Latina, during the meeting Clark expressed her pleasure to be accompanying Cuba in the process of updating its economic model and reiterated the UNDP’s willingness to continue offering all possible support to the island in the sphere of cooperation.

Díaz-Canel receives the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates
The First Vice President of the Councils of State and Ministers, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, received His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, who is on an official visit to the island, on Monday afternoon. Both authorities ratified the good state of bilateral relations and the possibilities of cooperation in the economic, commercial and financial sectors. They also discussed other issues of interest on the international and regional agenda.

Raúl receives Prime Minister of Timor-Leste
Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, President of Cuba’s Councils of State and Ministers, yesterday afternoon October 5, received the honorable Dr. Rui María de Araujo, Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, who is on an official visit to Cuba. The two leaders discussed the excellent state of bilateral relations and expressed their commitment to consolidating the ties of cooperation, fundamentally in the area of health. They also addressed other issues of international interest.

Evo Morales: The Five are heroes of Cuba and Bolivia
After decorating Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, René González, Fernando González and Antonio Guerrero, or the Five, as they are known internationally, with the title of Knight of the Legion of Honor of the Order of Marshall Andrés de Santa Cruz and Calahumana, Morales noted that they are also heroes of Latin America and Bolivia. The important distinction was also awarded to Colonel Orlando Cardoso Villavicencio.

Cabrisas receives Deputy Prime Minister of Saint Lucia

Raúl congratulates Granma
Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, President of Cuba’s Councils of State and Ministers sent a recognition to Granma on the occasion of the newspaper’s 50th anniversary, which was delivered by Rolando Alfonso Borges, Central Committee members and head of its ideological department for the press, to Granma editor Pelayo Terry, in a simple ceremony during the staff celebration on Saturday, October 3.

8,295 patients treated with stem cells
By the end of the first half of this year, the total number of patients treated with stem cells in Cuba had reached 8,295, Dr. Porfirio Hernández, deputy director of Research at the Institute of Hematology and Immunology, told Granma. First used in Cuba in February 2004, the advanced procedure is now offered in 14 of the 15 provinces of the country, with the specialties of orthopedics and traumatology, and angelology, seeing the most cases treated with 4,059 (49%) and 3,511 (42%), respectively.

Laotian President arrives in Cuba
The President of the People’s Republic of Laos, Choummaly Sayasoney, accompanied by a broad delegation, arrived in Cuba yesterday, October 1, on an official visit which will extend through the 4th. Also secretary general of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, the President was received by Deputy Foreign Minister Rogelio Sierra at Havana’s José Martí International Airport.
