The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Pertierra´s journals describe the testimony, evidence, legal skirmishes, quirks and follies of this very historic trial that features for the first time the close collaboration of the United States government with Cuban authorities to prosecute an ex CIA agent who is one of the masterminds of the fifty-year old dirty war against Cuba.

Raul Castro Meets with Former Latin American Statesmen
Havana, Jan 31 (Prensa Latina) President Raul Castro met with the former presidents of Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernandez, and Guatemala’s Alvaro Colom, who attended the Third International Conference for World Equilibrium. In the meeting with Fernandez, the former president and Raul Castro showed satisfaction with the friendly relations between the two countries and prospects for development.

Havana, Jan 29 (Prensa Latina) To forge a different world, free from the capitalist selfishness implies the construction of an ethics based in reasoning with a subjectivity rooted in the capacity to live the virtues as habits, Brazilian outstanding priest Frei Betto expressed here Tuesday. The renowned Brazilian intellectual and theologist talked to participants in the 3rd International Conference for World Balance, to approach the necessity to articulate an ethics permitting to overcome the inequalities and conflicts of the planet.

Cuba Receives the Pro Tempore Presidency of CELAC
Santiago de Chile, 28 Jan (Prensa Latina) The Head of State of Cuba, Raúl Castro, was granted by Chile the pro tempore presidency of the Communitty of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), at the closure of the First Summit of this integration bloc in this capital. Prensa Latina will keep informing its readers on the outcome of this international meeting. Piñera wished Cuban president, “a year full of good work” , to which Castro answered “I will continue the good work”.

Chileans Support Cuba’s Presidency in CELAC
Santiago, Chile, Jan 28 (Prensa Latina) The Chilean Movement of Solidarity with Cuba will support that archipelago in the pro tempore presidency it is assuming in the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), with a rally in this capital today. In remarks to Prensa Latina, activist Pedro Bronzic stated that a rally will be held at Plaza Italia to support the Cuban Revolution, which continues at the center of the international right-wing attacks.

Over 100 people attend Montreal cartoon exhibit of Gerardo Hernández
The exhibition/meeting was jointly organized on January 24 by the local Montreal branch of the CSN (one of the largest Quebec unions) and the Comité Fabio Di Celmo. The goal was to build support for the freedom of the Cuban Five as part of the worldwide effort. The attendees examined and reflected upon the exhibit. Dominique Daigneault, General Secretary of the Conseil central du Montréal métropolitain (CCMM-CSN), the sponsor of the event, said in her introductory remarks that she was moved to see so many people despite the record-breaking close to minus 40 degrees centigrade temperature.

Venezuelans March in Support of Democracy, Chavez
Caracas, Jan 23 (Prensa Latina) The Venezuelan people will fill the streets of Caracas today in a march called by the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), to celebrate the January 23, 1958 coup d’etat and in support of democracy and President Hugo Chavez. Social organizations, labor groups, parties and allied groups who are part of the Great Patriotic Pole, along with the people in general will participate in this great march known as “La toma de Caracas,” said Dario Vivas, national coordinator of the PSUV Mobilization.

FARC-EP Questions Gov’t About Multinationals in Colombian Fields
Havana, Jan 18 (Prensa Latina) The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army (FARC-EP) demanded the government explain today the presence of multinational companies in the fields of that South American country, and denounced the production of bio-fuels. Upon the resumption in Havana of peace talks with the Colombian Executive, guerrilla commander Andres Paris read a press release at the Conference Center about the FARC-EP’s stance on the subject.

Cuba Trains Authorities for General Elections
Havana, Jan 16 (Prensa Latina) The members of polling stations and other authorities in charge of the February 3 general elections in Cuba are prioritizing their training for the polls, the National Electoral Commission (CEN) reported. According to Caridad Alvarez, spokesperson for that entity, the upcoming elections are different from those which occurred in late 2012. This time, voters will elect 14,537 councilors or delegates to the municipal assemblies of People’s Power, requiring specific training.

Caricatures by One of Cuban Five to Be Exhibited in Canada
Ottawa, Jan 15 (Prensa Latina) The exhibit of caricatures Humor from my Pen, by Gerardo Hernández, one of the five anti-terrorist Cuban fighters unfairly held in US prisons since 1998, will be opened for the first time as of Jan.24 in Québec. They are images that speak for themselves, according to a communiqué received today in Prensa Latina.

Colombian Govt, FARC-EP Resume Dialogue
Havana, Jan 14 (Prensa Latina) Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People´s Army (FARC-EP) resume today the peace talks in this city after a holiday break of 23 days. The parties have returned to the Havana´s International Conference Center, permanent venue of the talks created on November 19, to continue the discussions focused on the issue of land, considered a key factor in this new attempt to end decades of armed conflict.
