The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Pertierra´s journals describe the testimony, evidence, legal skirmishes, quirks and follies of this very historic trial that features for the first time the close collaboration of the United States government with Cuban authorities to prosecute an ex CIA agent who is one of the masterminds of the fifty-year old dirty war against Cuba.

The independence of the “last to know”
In Full Metal Jacket, Stanley Kubrick’s film about Vietnam, there is a scene in which the U.S. officer dealing with the press during the war gives the journalists instructions on how to cover events in the field. The slightest slip-up is unacceptable, including anything from photographing a singer or actress on hand to lift the spirits of the troops, to the exact word for each type of person on the U.S. or enemy side, like those fleeing the war who are to be called “evacuees” or “refugees.”

Cuba opposes violence and supremacist expressions
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez lamented the death of several individuals as a result of the violent assault of Trump supporters on the U.S. Congress. On his Twitter account, the Cuban head of state condemned the events, as well as the violence and expression of supremacist positions.
After a day of absolute terror, described by the country’s media as a blow to the heart of U.S. democracy, Vice President Mike Pence formally declared that Joe Biden had obtained 306 electoral college votes.

Creating culture for socialism
During the month of April, this new year, the Eighth Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba will take place, where among other central questions to be analyzed is the functioning of the Party, its ties with the masses, ideological-political activity, and cadre policy, at a moment considered opportune for the updating of our strategy of resistance and development. The glass was literally broken yesterday in the “showcase of democracy” with which the United States has presumed to give the world lessons, when violent supporters of President Donald Trump invaded and disrupted the Capitol in Washington, the seat of Congress, as Representatives and Senators were preparing to confirm Democrat Joe Biden as the country’s next President. The assault on the Capitol is the most serious attack in the history of the building that symbolizes U.S. power, since the British set it on fire.

Achiever of the impossible
During this very tense, difficult year, in which we were obliged to confront COVID-19, as well as an unprecedented imperial offensive, Fidel has been at our side. Cuba’s response to the pandemic, here and in other countries around the world, has been admirable. As Díaz-Canel has reiterated, Fidel’s strategic thinking in the field of medicine and science, his extreme sensitivity to the most vulnerable and his deep conviction that nothing is worth more than the life of a human being, carried decisive weight in this victory.

After more than 140 sanctions since 2017, with almost nothing more than snatching the Cubans and not fulfilling the promise to discipline the communist island, he says goodbye to the White House with the ridiculous act of blacklisting the company he markets Cubita coffee. Has there ever been a leader in history where the discrepancy between the global reach of his power and the ridiculousness of his person has been more pathetic?

Cuba facing the economic crossroads
The country has had to face the paralysis of tourism for months, as a consequence of the expansion of COVID-19; which has notably affected foreign exchange earnings and the Gross Domestic Product. In turn, it has had to spend more than 1,500 million Cuban pesos and more than 100 million dollars for the expenses of the confrontation with the pandemic by the national public health system.

San Isidro: The latest episode of the imperial reality show
Donald Trump is leaving. But some Cubans, who arouse only shame in others, are claiming him as their president. “Trump 2020,” they shout. As President, he’s done almost everything to choke the people of Cuba, and now he has the cynicism to say that this is to help them. When he blocked, delayed, or increased the cost of the arrival of petroleum shipments, when he blocked commerce and transfers of funds to the country, he said sarcastically that they don’t know how to manage their economy.

Who’s behind the anti-Cuban show in San Isidro?
Since the end of the 19th century, the San Isidro neighborhood in Old Havana was considered a “tolerance zone,” until 1959, when life changed with the triumph of the Revolution. It was a neighborhood of humble people, harassed by the presence of Yankee Marines who came ashore in search of fun and cheap sex. Once the butt of jokes, San Isidro now has 14 family doctors’ offices, a traditional medicine clinic, a veterinary clinic, three child care centers, a kindergarten and four schools.
