UNESCO recognizes Cuba’s leadership in education

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has recognized the results of Cuba’s work to achieve quality, inclusive education in the 2020 Global Monitoring Report on Education for All -known as the GEM report. This global monitoring mechanism is used to evaluate progress on Sustainable Development Goal (SDA) No. 4: Ensure inclusive, equitable, quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Havana continues COVID-19 battle

Havana is the only remaining province in the country that has not made the transition to phase one of the COVID-19 recovery period. A total of 102 confirmed active cases of the new coronavirus in the province were reported, with new three cases added June 22, and most with a known source of infection; two local transmission events; an incidence rate per 100,000 inhabitants of 5.20 in the last 15 days, tending to decrease over the course of this time span; and a reproductive index of 0.62.

Cuba: Matanzas moves to recovery period, Havana advancing

The COVID-19 prevention and control task force, during its daily meeting led by President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, yesterday approved the opening of the recovery period’s first phase in the province of Matanzas, leaving only Havana working to make the transition, while 91.4% of COVID-19 patients in Cuba have recuperated. As detailed by the Prime Minister, the decision is effective today, June 23, in all Matanzas municipalities, joining the 14 other territories that are gradually moving toward a new normal.

Cuba was obliged to wait to embrace our heroes in white lab coats, who spent two weeks in quarantine after returning from Italy, before heading to their neighborhoods and communities for a warm welcome.

Farewell to Rosita

The remains of Rosita Fornés were laid to rest in Cuban soil yesterday, June 16, at Havana’s Colón Cemetery, in accordance with the last wishes of this jewel of our culture, who won the respect and everlasting affection of several generations of her compatriots. During the intimate ceremony, poet and ethnologist Miguel Barnet bid farewell to Rosita, describing her as the most versatile and charismatic Cuban artist of all time.
