The El Paso Diary is written by José Pertierra--an attorney who represents the government of Venezuela in its request for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles. Pertierra´s journals describe the testimony, evidence, legal skirmishes, quirks and follies of this very historic trial that features for the first time the close collaboration of the United States government with Cuban authorities to prosecute an ex CIA agent who is one of the masterminds of the fifty-year old dirty war against Cuba.

Bolt & Pichardo make headlines at World Athletics Championships
Jamaica’s Usain Bolt and Cuban Pedro Pablo Pichardo made Latin American and Caribbean headlines today, after winning medals at the 2015 World Athletics Championships in Beijing. Bolt, six time Olympic champion, won the 200 meters and finished with his best time this year, 19.55 seconds.

Cuba to participate in 4th World Conference of Parliamentary Presidents
The central issue to be addressed at the event will be new objectives for sustainable development, with parliamentary leaders focused on the definition and implementation of specific goals. The Cuban delegation will be led by Ana María Mary Machado, vice president of the National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP), and includes four other deputies.

Respect and friendship
Official diplomatic relations between the Vatican and Cuba were established in 1935, and have been maintained since then without interruption. The 80 year history of these ties has been marked by important events, among them Pope John Paul’s five-day stay on the island in 1998, and the 2012 trip of Benedict XVI.

Cuba, Spain and Brazil at the 21st International Guitar Festival of Costa Rica
Cuba, Brazil and Spain will star the 21st International Guitar Festival, to be held in Costa Rica from August 28 to 30, at the National Theater, as said in a statement by its organizing committee. The event will last three nights, each having a different approach: a Cuban night, a Spanish night and a Brazilian night, with the participation of outstanding artists from these three countries.

Combating drought with preparation and teamwork
Havana has not escaped the current drought affecting the entire country, given that its total reservoir capacity stands at 35%. As a consequence the city has 1,595 liters of water per second (L/s) less than necessary. Some 48,194 residents have reported problems with their water supply, with Old Havana, Central Havana and Bo yeros the three worst affected municipalities.

Take 6 set to perform in Cuba in Human Voices Festival
Renowned American a Capella music group Take 6 will perform in Havana in late September as part of a music festival called Les voix humaines (Human Voices), organized and sponsored by Cuban maestro, Leo Brouwer. The concert will be held in Havana’s Karl Marx Theater on September 26th as part of a festival that will gather in the Cuban capital important figures of the world’s music scene, including Portuguese singer Dulce Pontes, Spainish Mayte Martín, and other singers and performers who have cultivated the classical and popular music repertoire.

Cuban universities to promote reading projects
Members of a project called “Leer Todos”, (Everyone Reads), of the University of Cienfuegos will make up a network of university this school year to promote reading aimed at looking to for ways to increase the healthy and educational habit. Luis Orestes Oliva, Head of the Spanish-Literature Department told AIN News Agency that as part of the experiences of the last three years, conditions will be ready to extend the project to the rest of the country.

Frank Fernández, a hit in Chicago
The U.S. press described maestro Frank Fernández as a virtuoso with complete command of the piano and a great power of communication, after his performance at the famous Ravinia Festival, in Chicago. John Von Rhein, the city’s most important music critic, praised the concert repertory, noting the musicians “grounding in both the standard classical repertory and in Cuban and Latin American vernacular music.”

Miguel Matamoros: “I am the son of Santiago de Cuba”
Miguel Matamoros was born on May 8, 1894 and died on April 15, 1971. 2015 marks the 90th anniversary of the founding of the famous Trío Matamoros, precisely on Miguel’s birthday in 1925. In the late 1960s, I was invited by some friends who studied music to the Santiago de Cuba carnival. These students of the National School of Arts (ENA) in Havana took me to the home where the giant of son, Miguel Matamoros, spent his final years.
