If we talk about challenging years, 2019 undoubtedly stands out for Havana. On January 2019, city residents lived a moment we will never forget. Just as the city was preparing to celebrate its 500th anniversary, we learned how the power of the wind could destroy everything in its path. On the evening of Sunday, January 27, residents of the municipalities of Diez de Octubre, Regla, San Miguel del Padrón, Guanabacoa and part of Havana del Este experienced a phenomenon like no other, which left six dead and injured over 190, while 5,000 suffered damages and substantial material losses.

Recovery efforts advancing in Villa Clara

“It is now vital to identify the damages precisely and as quickly as possible, in order to determine what is needed in each place,” Army General Raúl Castro Ruz stated during a working meeting held this Monday, October 10, at the Municipal Defense Council. Raúl outlined key issues for the recovery of the municipality of Maisí, where the towns of La Máquina (municipal capital), Punta de Maisí and Los Llanos, were the hardest hit with the passage of Hurricane Matthew.
