Cuban President receives Pope Francis at Havana’s Palace of the Revolution

On the afternoon of Sunday, September 20, the President of the Councils of State and Ministers, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, received Pope Francis, on a courtesy visit to Havana’s Palace of the Revolution. Raúl and the Bishop of Rome are currently holding private talks and will presently exchange gifts. After the ceremony, the Pontiff will make his way to the Cathedral of Havana, where residents from the municipality of Old Havana are currently awaiting him.

This Thursday, September 17, Cuban diplomat José Ramón Cabañas presented his credentials to the President of the United States, Barack Obama, to officially become the first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the island to Washington in over half a century. “Exchanging ambassadors since ancient times is a sign of normality and respect among nations,” Cabañas told Granma.

Pope Francis arrives tomorrow

Pope Francis, the Pontiff of the Catholic Church and Vatican City head of state will arrive in Cuba Saturday, September 19 to begin an apostolic visit which will continue through the 22nd. Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez announced today in a press conference that Cuban President Raúl Castro will participate in the United Nations General Assembly sessions and high level discussion, on September 25 and 28, respectively. During his stay in New York, the Army General and President of Cuba will additionally attend a conference on the empowerment of women, and hold meetings with sectors of U.S. society and representatives of the solidarity with Cuba movement, Rodríguez said.
